No it's not true about DIRECTV having all channels in HD next year. Just think about it many many of the stations on DIRECTV that are not in HD now do not have HD versions. And most of those channels have no plan to launch in HD.

bluegras, FYI, February can NEVER, EVER, have more than 29 days, and it only has 29 days every FOUR years, 2016, 2020, 2024, 2028, 2032, etc... Ever heard of a leap year? The rest of the time February only has 28 days.

4K will probably see more of a rollout on broadband than on satellite at first. They should be able to stream 4K on some of the newer satellite receivers out (or coming out soon). By doing it this way it does not require bandwidth to be dedicated to a transponder for particular channels. Also Netflix and other similar companies will offer 4K content. In many areas the speed of broadband is increasing dramatically and will more than be able to handle 4K. I don't believe it will take as long for 4K to be adopted than HD was (15 years).

4K is higher bandwidth than 1080p, is it not ? Reason I ask is it has been stated over and over and over that no provider, cable included, has the bandwidth to broadcast 1080p.

Any Provider, except OTA (maybe them also), has the bandwidth to broadcast 1080p24, they just do not wish to do it.

Actually I think 1080p24 is not as bandwidth hungry as 720p60 since the frame rate is so low.

So I guess next year we can expect a 4k hopper to go with the 4k joey launched this year. Speaking of 15 years ago and when they launched hd, can you remember the price was like $7.99 a month and it included like 3 hd channels? I think it was Discovery hd and two others. Cbs hd was also by itself and you could only get it if you could get distant networks. GOD , I've been with DISH way too long. I am reminiscing about the beginning of the hd transition and the prices I used to pay. And yet here we are 15 years later and we still don't have all the hdchannels we can in hd. I would think by now that at least all the premium channels would be in at least in hd. The only other regular channel I have wanted in hd is Tv Land and it is available in hd if DISH would just add it. Oh well , maybe in another 15 years we will have at least all hd channels, because there will be a contraction of the available channels for sat and cable. Just like the media companies are merging and consolidating , I bet we can expect the same in the amount of channels that these companies will devote their resources to. Also the amount of subs will continue to drop ,due to growing cord cutting and cord nevers .

The only reason I don't want the premiums all in HD is because they all replay the shows and movies from the original channel(usually). I know Starz Black and similar channels may have a slightly different lineup, and they can have an HD channel but 3 per would be plenty... And I think that's about what they have. Save the bandwidth for other channels. As usual though, stepping back and looking at it from that perspective, I may be in the minority.
