the "I now have a hopper 3 and I have questions" thread

Before I dove in and swriched to Dish, I remember a discussion on here regarding recording an in-progress recording.

IIRC, someone stated that if you are watching a program and hit record, it will only record from that point forward unless you first rewind the show and start the recording from there....

That isn't the way it's working for me now (records episode from start if I was on the channel when it began...).

So if it was that way, it certainly isn't now... Just curious if someone can refresh my memory.
That behavior changed from the ViP to the Hopper. Honestly, I prefer the ViP behavior of recording from the point you are at, when I just want to record a news clip and not the entire program. I don't like it presuming I want the entire recording or entire existing buffer when I hit record. I like having full control.

So, I am new to the Hopper world. I was just looking through the PTAT shows to see what I might want to save. I've saved a lot of series. But I can't figure out how to save a one-off show--not a series (like the Grammys, for example). Can someone tell me how to do that?

If you select "Must See TV All-star Tribute" You will see Watch, Save, Save Series, and Delete.

I only had Watch and Delete before I started watching and now have Resume, Start Over, and Delete.

Is it an upcoming timer event or already recorded? I'm not in front of my TV to check.

An event already recorded, but without its own timer, so it's in PTAT.

If HDMI-CEC is enabled, turning the TV off also turns the Hopper off. The inactivity time setting only kicks in when the receiver is left on.

I didn't know that there were any control signals sent via the HDMI connection. That's pretty slick. I just checked If I shut the Hopper 3 off it will not shut the TV off.
When both are off and I turn the Hopper 3 on it does turn the TV on but the only problem is I use a sound bar and the Hopper 3 does not turn the sound bar on. I
have not taught the Hopper 3 remote the TV commands yet so that's why it won't turn the sound bar on.

I have had this TV at least 4 - 5 years and I didn't think the HDMI ports would have been that advanced. It's a Sony and when I select my Blue Ray play on the TV
remote it turns the the BR player on and if both are off when I turn the BR player on it will turn the TV on and select the HDMI input for the BR player BUT
I have the 2 using Sony's "S" command buss.

Thanks for all of the inputs everyone.

NRD2, can you run your sound bar from your TV that turns on when you turn on the Hopper? We run our DVD/Home Theater off our TV so it also goes on when the Hopper is turned on.

Odd. I have Watch, Save Series, Save, Delete.

Hopefully this wasn't already covered somewhere else and I saw some mention of it earlier in this thread...

We just got upgraded a few weeks back from 722 VIP series to Hopper 3 and last night while in the middle of a show, I wanted to record from that point to the end. I paused the show at the point I wanted, hit the select, then record (record this), and it started going through like I was setting up a timer (only once, etc). It didn't actually record that I could tell and yet it created a one time timer that never fired.

How do you record a show in progress manually ? I'm stumped.

With the 52 remote, Press Select and you will get a menu on the bottom of the screen. Move over one click to the Record icon and press Select. It will start recording from that spot.

Hmm, that's what I did. Didn't seem to work for me. I'll have to try it a few more times to see if I can repro.

I just did it on my H3 and it instantly began recording the channel from the time I started it..

Thanks for checking. I wonder if it has anything to do with being on a channel that was about to be part of PTAT.

So, our local CBS does the national news at 7pm. I was already like 30 minutes behind anyway (had the news paused while I was working the grill), and PTAT doesn't start until 8pm EST - anyway - by the time I got to a segment late in the news, I'm pretty sure it was already after 8pm by that time and even though I had the news paused, select, record this, etc., I held the back button to get to live tv and when I went to look for the recorded segment, no where to be found.

Anyway - I'll have to experiment some more when I get home tonight before and during PTAT.

I'll post my findings if I discover anything.

So, just to clarify my long-held belief on this...for instance, there is no way to record just a 5-minute news segment by rewinding back 5 minutes from live and recording from there? It will record the entire program or the entire buffer, whichever is less?

Did this yesterday on the Cooking Channel. If the show's in the buffer (tuned from the beginning), it will record from the beginning if you press record while watching. Any reason that is not OK?
