Well it seems the stupid 1 am reboot has not been removed from the H3.

All that has changed is the H3 will not ask you if it can reboot like the other hoppers do and will just skip the reboot and wait for the system to no longer be in use.

It has nothing to do with guide data not updating it is just the normal system reboot like we all hated about the other hoppers.

The other difference besides not asking every morning if it is OK is after 72 hours it will no longer skip the reboot because it is in use or timers and will just go right ahead and reboot.

So if you have timers from 1 to 4 or watch from 1 to 4 expect a reboot every 3 days.

All the more reason(s) for why we need to be able to control when that reboot happens.... when I select a program series to record, I have no control over when the episodes air. They might be mid-day, mid-nite, or from 12:30 to 1:30AM.... so short of manually massaging the schedule every day, I can expect split-recordings every 3 days, and interruped viewing should I happen to be watching TV at 1AM. This issue does not make me happy.

All you have to do is turn off the Hopper and Joeys when they are not in use. It is not necessary to leave the Hopper turned on for a future recording session. It will turn itself on, do the recording, and then turn itself off. I cannot believe that someone is in continuous view mode 24/7/365. Even if you are viewing live at 1AM when you go to bed shut it off and it will do its update when you are asleep or working or outside having a good time with nature. If it has a period of time within every 72 hours to do its update

turning everything off does no good if something is recording at 1AM - the reboot still happens - and I end up with split recordings. Who decides our families viewing habits and schedule(s)?

You are not understanding the principle here. The reboot will not happen only at 1AM. If you have left your Joeys or Hopper powered on throughout a 72 hour period, yes, it will reboot at 1AM. Now, if you leave all receivers in standby when you are not using them the update will happen when they are all in standby and that might be at 9AM when you are not doing anything. Now, if you are recording 24 hours a day, then yes, you are going to get a 1AM reboot every 72 hours.....

The update happens every night from 1 to 4. If 72 hours pass it will be FORCED at 1am. My understanding is a 9pm standby period will not prevent a 1AM reboot. It must be done from 1 to 4.

BUT Dish is currently rethinking that decision .

I do appreciate the clarification - honestly. One of my main problems is that with "series recordings" I have no control over the time that the episodes air (and record). A lot of these programs are occurring at all hours of the night and day. As I see it (and maybe I'm missing something here??) I would have to manually go into the schedule every day and "skip" recordings in order to allow the H3 to "rest". Also, I do watch TV every night through the 1AM hour (that's my personal habit). So every 3rd night, my viewing (and most often recordings as well) is interrupted without warning . I guess I shouldn't need the warning though, as in my case, the reboot happens at exactly 1AM.

I am really open to suggestions here (other than altering my personal viewing habits/schedule) and I still maintain that the best solution would be the option of scheduling our own reboot time. I don't understand why DISH doesn't get that. I find it hard to believe that I'm the only one with this problem. I'm sure that to many this appears to be a small thing. To me, it's frustrating, and when I think about it too much, I get PO'd. In a way, I feel like I'm being "held hostage" by DISH's policy of messing with my personal viewing schedule. Anyway, thanks for letting me vent. Hey - what about an "option" to NOT record between specific hours??

Maybe someone is listening.............

Interesting (and weird) ...any thoughts on why the reboot MUST be between the hours of 1 and 4AM?? I was thinking (and thought someone actually mentioned this somewhere around here) that as long as I made sure everything was idle for a few hours each day, I would be OK. But this sounds like having a "reversed" schedule (like working evenings for a living) and watching TV in the early morning hours is a problem. It would be really good for DISH to "re-think" their decision.

That someone was me and, with a little research, I found that I was wrong. The timing seems to actually be between 1 and 5 AM. Those are the hours that they stream these downloads. The downloads are global and they, undoubtedly, don't want to take up bandwidth all day long when they need that bandwidth for TV. So, you mentioned earlier that you watch TV every morning through the 1AM hour. You also mentioned that you are recording things through the AM hours. Let's say that you are watching TV from 1 to 3AM every day. That leaves 2 hours that needs some kind of standby time at least every third day. I'd look at my DVR schedule to see what exactly is schedule to record in the 3-5AM slot every day. Is there something that I could schedule for a different time? Is it something that I absolutely must have? You really only need to leave a half hour slot open once every third day. I think you are one of just a few that has this issue today because you are keeping your H3 busy throughout the early morning hours every day. I don't see them changing the way they do their thing. Is there a way for you to adjust your timing?

I totally hear you... but here is a problem with "series recordings" : take the current 3 - NCIS's as an example.... when I chose this to record (however many episodes I want to save) they are happening all over the map and clock. As far as I know, there is really no good or easy way to control when those recordings will happen. Sometimes programs are aired with multiple episodes back-to-back and it would only take 3 episodes to span that entire 1-4AM time slot. Short of manually going into the schedule every single day and "skipping" specific times and episodes, I know of no other solution. I wish there were something I could do differently. Maybe we need a recording option like "do not record between the hours of X and Y. or "do not record on (day of the week)" so that every third day would be available for whatever reason it is that we are rebooting.

At the risk of sounding like the proverbial broken record, a "user selectable reboot time" would solve most if not all of these problems. Digging through the archives, I keep finding references to Dish making this change "soon" LOL

Hopefully someone smarter than me (which wouldn't be saying much - could even be an inanimate object) might have a solution to the recordings issue while we are waiting...........

The software was written to do reboots from 1 to 4 so that''s when it must be done. I guess they picked 1 to 4 hoping most wouldn't be in use.

That was a ridiculous thing for me to post and I apologize profusely.
I was having a shi**y day and did not need to type any of that response.
Not an excuse, but an explanation. I am reporting my own post and asking that it be removed.

I appreciate that - your explanation (or whatever you would like to call it) says a lot more than your original remarks. And for the record - I got myself so worked up over the rebooting problem that I got sort of carried away with my "research". Thanks again - we're good :)

You're not alone.... I've been screaming
at dish for 5 years now. Oh well......

CBS and NBC each have late night talk shows airing at 1am, and their series recordings on my Hopper are regularly interrupted.

I find it very annoying that the reboot time is not available as a system preference. A similar preference was available on the 722.

If the reboot must take place between 1am- 4am or 5am, why not later than 1am?

Why not reboot around 3:00 am? In my area there is nothing on from late night and it is still too early for morning ,so perfect time to reboot.

I've yet to hear why a reboot time must be "fixed" - is there a reason why everyone must reboot at exactly the same time? I still haven't heard a good reason (or any reason for that matter) why we can't select our own time (probably within certain parameters). When I select a series to record, I have no control over when the episodes air - sometimes they show up at 3AM.

Many of us have been complaining about the forced reboot for a long time. There have been a lot of threads posted on this topic. Despite what seems like a simple fix (to allow us to set the reboot time, just like I could with my old 722 and 722K), Dish has never given fixing this issue a priority.

With all the other issues I see posted here on this board, I would say that Dish has too many other more serious problems to solve.

My experience with Hoppers and Hopper3 from their respective inceptions has been smooth and trouble free. Hopper3 reboots have been amended to only force after 72 hours without inactivity. Furthermore as I've stated before, I have never had a Skinemax recording split or failed due to reboots on either model. Your "serious problems" assertion is a bit over the top.
