NBC 4K Rio Olympics

I'm trying the 4K channel on my 4K Joey (1080 Sony Bravia, though) and the channel has been freezing and blocking/pixelating. Clear skies, so signal strength shouldn't be an issue. I would expect the NBC bug to be a bit more colorful, too, but overall the colors seem muted.

Now, if only I understood the rules for Judo... Watch and learn.

So the reason why the Opening Ceremony was not shown in 4K on DISH on Friday night was because of NBC...

My understanding is that NBC wanted the 4K Channel to be made available by time zone so that way people on the West Coast would not watch the 4K Opening Ceremony 3 hours earlier as it was airing in the East Coast.

DIRECTV however did blackout the channel by time zone, but people in the Mountain Time Zone had to wait until 11 PM MT to see it.

Apparently DISH can not black out things by time zones they can just make the channel available or unavailable to all.

While this explains why it was blacked out on Friday Night but does not explain why DISH did not air it on Saturday.

Anyone else actually check the 4k feed on Hopper3 to see what resolution it is actually at? When I tune into CH 146 or 148-01 I am only getting 1080i resolution being output (yes I have a 4k TV & AVR). My Denon receiver shows the Hopper3 outputting 1080i to receiver. What gives?

Yup pure 4K resolution.

If you are not getting 4K it could be the HDMI cable which may not support 4K...

Or on some older 4K TV TV's there is only HDMI Port that supports HDCP 2.2. On my old Samsung 8550 this port is the one marked (from memory) MHM?

Also you mention going through a Denon receiver, does it support HDCP 2.2? Try going direct to the TV and see that way. :)

Scott,

Thanks for the quick reply confirming 4k output. I have a 2016 Denon S910w AVR that supports HDCP 2.2, I purchased new HDMI cables that are High speed 2.2 capable. My TV is a 2016 Vizio that is HDCP 2.2 compliant (on HDMI 1, 2 & 5 inputs, I am using HDMI 1). Vizio recommends HDMI for 1080P and higher signals (it goes to 60Hz), others only to 30Hz). Do you know what Hz the Hopper outputs? 30 or 60? I will also try going straight to the TV (HDMI 5) in case there is an issue with AVR.

I'd also like to point out I have been able to use Dish VOD and play a 4k okay through the AVR and TV. That is why I am scratching my head on CH 146 & 148-01.

That's what I would try as an experiment. Also see if the PIP-MultiView comes in 4K.

My Vizio tv says 1080I on the 1st input as well. I think this should explain it.

Not quite,Dish sends the 480i/p signal down from the satellite, the user selects 1080i/p format on their Dish receiver(Dish receiver's do not have a native pass through setting),then the 1080i signal goes through the HDMI cable to the 4K UHDTV

HDMI input then comes out 4K on the TV screen.

But when you check you System Information screen it says the input is 1080i which it is,the only way to tell it's 4K is by the user's eyesight.

I have an OTA antenna connected to the 4K UHDTV's tuner and my 480i channels are not as good being upscaled compared to the 1080i signal being upscaled. So that's using my eyesight and my opinion on the upscaling to 4K subject.

Results do vary by the user, some cannot see the difference, some can,if I could not see a difference in the picture,I would have returned my 2015 4K UHDTV and got a 2015 1080p HDTV.

Correct, You have to have the UHD HDMI Color set on, on your Samsung tv for HDR to work. On the 8550 you need to upgrade to the evolution kit. You also need a HDCP 2.2 port. The older samsungs the MHL port is HDCP 2.2 but doesn't support 4:4:4 UHD color. Only the evolution kit and newer models do this. Also, on your AVR you have to have it set to pass through 4:4:4 signals. I learned this the hard way getting HDR to work on my Xbox One S. Some TV's and AVR's may have this hidden as my AVR did. I had to go through and advanced setup menu and change the UHD color output to mode 1 for HDR pass through.

NBC really screwed this one up. From what I'm hearing is that the feed NBC is providing doesn't have ATMOS as they originally promised. It is in DD 7.1 + like how DirecTV aired it. HDR is on the main program over at SES3 but it doesn't seem to be implemented well. I have all of my stuff set for 4:2:0, 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 passthrough for HDR and cant even see the HDR signal, wich tells me they are not using 10 bit HDR, I am wondering if its Dolby Vision or a Sony version of HDR. Most analyzers list it as MPEG H - HVEC 4:2:0. To me, this tells me Dolby Atmos and HDR are not ready for prime time yet as NBC hasn't figured it out. I hope that with the golf tests DirecTV had this last week, they can figure it out. They have done a good job at being the leader when it comes to UHD and figuring out how to get it done.

The only input on my Vizio that works with the Hopper in 4K is HDMI 5.
Same here. I do notice that on hdmi 5 the other channels don't look as good as when it is on hdmi 1. I thinks it's because the upscaling is only on inputs 1 to 4 and none on 5. The 1080i upscaled on the hdmi 1 looks great anyway.

I was only seeing 1080i on my vizio until i switched to input 5. now it says 2160 - am i not seeing full 4K? any thoughts why?
