DISH Introduces Flex Pack

One of the nice things on the website as you are putting Flex Pack together is if you go pack crazy they will recommend one of the regular packages and give a better fit

Too bad that switching to a regular package still won't give you all the channels...

Hi

I'm wondering why I don't see the Flex Pack under My programming, Change Programming?

Also, If I was to change my Service to the Flex Pack, would I lose the HD Free For Life (reg $10)$ 0.00 ? and then be charged $10 for HD?

I tried to downgrade in the past, but then it said I would no longer get HD Free For Life, and would have to pay $10 for the HD

I had to do a Chat with them as it did not show for me online either. And I didn't lose HD free. I have the Flex plus one pack and dropped my bill $29.

I can only confirm that the 211k (similar VIP receiver without dvr) has guide information for the ota channels and it is not even subscribed to DISH any longer. This was a change about a month and a half ago that I noticed when I installed my new hopper 3 and I used the 211k to help peak my new dish with the hybrid lnb. This receiver hasn't been subscribed to DISH since 2012 ,but is connected to the satellite dish so I can use it to power my terk 44 ota antenna that diplexes the signal into both ota and satellite. Because the hopper 3 won't let you diplex your signal at all.

I don't think guide data is a receiver-specific function. At this point, Hoppers, 722, and 211k receivers have "kept" their guide data for OTA locals so it appears to be safe to assume this is the case.

Now, the skeptic in me is wondering if this is an oversight on Dish's part or not ! Has anyone from DIRT commented on how OTA guide data is now remaining available ?

I think this is intentional on Dish's part. Around the same time they made this change, they also stopped allowing deactivated HD receivers to get the HD feeds of the free preview channels. So, it is a trade-off. We lost the satellite-delivered HD free previews, but we gained guide data for our free OTA locals.

Just switched to flex and added 4 packages to get the majority of channels I will watch. I am now missing 2 or 3 channels, but I have shaved $ 36/month off my bill (actually $28, I canceled the Protection plan at the same time).

What plan did you have?
Did you find the protection plan a waste of money? I currently have it, only used it once or twice when I had them come out and install new hopper 3. Might be time to drop that

The protection plan is like insurance (car, home, etc). You don't "use" it unless something (bad) happens. Drop it. If your receiver dies, add the plan back on (do it online if you want), then contact Dish about the receiver issue.

I've called Dish about a receiver that needed replaced and the reps will say, "I see you don't have the protection plan. Let's add it first, then process the receiver return."
