DISH and Tribune Broadcasting Reach Agreement on Carriage and Retransmission Consent
Release Date: Saturday, September 3, 2016 3:44 pm MDT

Terms:

Dateline City:
CHICAGO and ENGLEWOOD, Colo.
Comprehensive Contract Covers 42 Local Television Stations and Cable Net WGN America

CHICAGO and ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Sept. 3, 2016 – Tribune Broadcasting, a subsidiary of Tribune Media (NYSE: TRCO), and DISH Network L.L.C., a wholly-owned subsidiary of DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ: DISH), today announced a long-term, comprehensive agreement on carriage and retransmission consent. The agreement restores DISH carriage of Tribune Broadcasting’s 42 local television stations in 33 markets, and Tribune’s cable network, WGN America.

The companies issued the following joint statement:

“We want to thank our viewers and customers for their patience and support as we worked through this lengthy process. We’re pleased to move forward and again be able to provide the content of Tribune’s local stations and WGN America for years to come.”

Both WGN America and Tribune’s local stations are expected to again be available to DISH customers later today. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

I hate these press releases.

It's like two primary election candidates from the same party going at each other's throats with mudslinging and attack ads, but then once the primary election is over, they both play nice to provide support for the party.

Well can anyone with Tribune owned locals take a look and see if they now have WGN as a local channel as well as national channel? Just wondering if Tribune got what it wanted in regard to WGN being carried both as a national feed and a local feed in each Tribune dma. This will determine who blinked in regards to this dispute.

From what I know, WGN9 local can only be shown in the Chicago DMA, not in any DMA that Tribune has a station. That is FCC rules, not something that can be negotiated through a carriage agreement.

I may have missed what you are asking.... were they wanting their local WGN to be carried nationally along with the National WGN?

I was not aware if it is true they wanted that - but actually perhaps they could now because it isn't an affiliate anymore.

Just because they aren't a CW affiliate anymore doesn't mean they are no longer a local channel, subject to FCC DMA coverage rules.

I have to take credit for this whole settlement. Earlier today I finally changed the timers for my local CW station to the OTA version to make sure I did nto miss any fall premieres. I guess now the question is why didn't I do this in July.

The timing of the agreement points to a possibility that I mentioned very early on. Dish was not willing to enter an agreement for WGN9 until their CW affiliation had expired. They did not want to pay for an unknown entity.
