Fee Fight! DIRECTV Could Lose 18 Local Stations Today

- DIRECTV today could lose 18 local TV stations in seven states due to a fee fight with their owner, News-Press & Gazette.

News-Press & Gazette has posted a notice at its company web site alerting DIRECTV viewers that it's involved in new carriage negotiations with the satcaster and that they could lose their signals if a new deal is not reached. The notice does say the company is "hopeful" of reaching an agreement to prevent any channel blackouts.

While the notice does not mention a deadline, The Desert Sun quotes the general manager of one station, KESQ-TV, as saying the deadline is 6 p.m. ET today.

I seem to remember old postings about DirecTV sometimes temporarily substituting the same network from a nearby city (such as Denver) until an agreement is reached. I believe thats wishful thinking.
I don't recall that happening before .... With that said, keep in mind that they could turn on the ones from NY or LA without having too much trouble seeing they are Conus .. thats the Major networks only.

I just saw on my local news on KIFI which is part of this that they are still negotiating. It said that the deadline has been extended to January 11 at 6 pm ET.

Only 1 day, thats probably a Good sign that they are making progress.

Missed the beginning of the 5 o'clock news but it's still on so that's a good sign.

This is the reason the AM21 needs to come back to life. This would solve a lot of issues for most people. Yes I understand that there are people that cannot obtain their locals due to the fact of location, but by DirecTV and Dish for that matter, I feel that they would have a lot more leverage with the retrans negotiations saying that most of our customers are getting their locals OTA. It would be a tough sell, but in my opinion, I feel this would help.

They were going to it about 4 years ago, not sure what happened with their plan though.

When you lose a channel on DTV does the guide information go away also? I have dish and the guide just says "KWTV shut off" in the time slots.

My local ABC Network has been shut down but the guide info is still there. At least you can see what you are missing and maybe download it from "On Demand."

The Arizona Republic obviously isn't a fan of "D". Head line in Sports Page, "Directv feud keeps some NFL playoffs out of Yuma". The article includes several quotes from NPG Properties slamming "D" mentioning that "D" SEEMS TO BE ( great phrase to use when you want to spew malicious BS) involved in a lot of carriage disputes as those of us with the satellite company know well - we often wonder what Pac-12 Networks look like. No mention about the banner from Cox Cable running across the Channel 12 screen telling Cox viewers that they would shut down Channel 12 on Friday the 13th because of a similar dispute.

It would be nice if Mr. Lowe looked to see what was going on .... 99% of the time D* is NOT the one pulling the station, its the Station taking it down from the Provider.

I'm not so sure about your percentage, but it is nearly always the station doing the removal, not Directv.

Why is it if I am a D* subscriber I have to have a crawl across my screen on my local ABC channel stating that if I am a DISH sub, I could be losing the local ABC tomorrow ?
As a D* sub, I don't need a crawl telling me about that.

I suspect it is because the local channel is putting that scroll on the screen, so it is showing up for everybody rebroadcasting the channel. Probably showing up on the cable providers, also.

Yep most likely it's going up over their OTA feed as well, and majority of the time, (80 percent), that's how DirecTV gets its signal from the local provider.
