Sling TV, Dish Network’s OTT TV service tailored to cord-cutters, is offering a deep discount on the AirTV Player and AirTV Adapter to customers who agree to prepay for three months of service.

Per one version of the promo, Sling TV is selling that device bundle for $50, down from the regular price of $129.99, to customers whose base service is $20 or more.

AirTV is an OTA/OTT combo device for cord-cutters that runs on Android TV. Dish introduced AirTV in January at CES, and recently released a firmware update that enables the AirTV guide to integrate local channels that are received over-the-air.

Well, I expect them to lose money on this type of thing. Much like Sony and Microsoft apparently lose money on the consoles. These are 1 time revenue products that hopefully lead to a continuous revenue stream in terms of subscribers to sling (or psn, or xbox live) etc.

I agree. And keyword there is definitely "hopefully."

Not a bad deal.

I would say this is one of the best Android TV boxes out there on the market that can do 4K outside of the NVIDIA Shield.

With the software updates that the unit has received it is now a very very good box.

How long will they continue to update the software, though? That's always my concern with buying something like this. The box doesn't guarantee any residual payments to Sling or Dish, so there's always a chance they could abandon it (like the Dish Pal)

My Dish DTVPAL DVR works just fine, software wise, even though the last update was many years ago. It just seems maybe the tuner is fading...

I still have 3 that work fine with psip. They are backups to my tivo's now, but still have timers that record weekly. I would still be using them as my primary OTA dvr's, but the tivo's provided me some convenience abilities that make live easier managing the dvrs from my home, when my mom or dad have problems.

It's not a DISH box so hard to say. With each update it keeps getting better and better.

Yes but they are allowing companies to make other devices which can use the SlingTV service such as players as the AIR TV and maybe some new TV's with Sling TV support built in.

Got my air tv today. Figured why not. I have to say I really like the integration of everything. Very seamless. Box is quick too. Much more responsive than my firetv.

It's the second best android tv box out there on the market with the first place box being the Nvidia Shield.

It's fast, does 4K and works well.
