DISH lost over 318,000 subs first quarter of 2017

Dish Network reported an overall loss of 143,000 customers for the first quarter of this year. Removing SLING TV from the equation , LRG projects that the linear DISH satellite platform lost 318,000 customers during the period.

It seems people 40 and younger are just fine without any pay TV service like Dish, DriecTV and cable. The majority of my friends have dropped service and rely on getting their programming through their internet. I feel I'm the last of a dying breed since I don't want to give up my Hopper.

I'm right there with you on the hopper. The funniest thing is my 16 year old son is laying in his bed watching Netflix on his small phone screen and right across from his bed ,not 5 ft away ,sets a 50"3D hdtv and he prefers the phone screen to the tv. When I was his age I had to buy myself a 19" color tv just to watch something different in my room than my dad. He has a Joey, PlayStation 4 ,gaming computer that costed about $900.00, a mini fridge full of water and diet sodas, and he doesn't even know how good he has it.

Too many people to choose from. I'm by far the hardest on them but then my wife makes up for me along with the grandparents and aunts and uncles.

Yep. Both parents definitely have to be on the same page understanding the obligations we have as parents to teach our children responsibility and productivity.

I admit it my wife is the weaker one on Jake. I have always rewarded him for doing great in school and for doing his chores. He has made mostly AB honor roll since he was in Jr. High . Next year he graduates. So yes I have given him a lot of electronics and cell phones like the latest I phone one year for Christmas and this last year he got the latest android phone. So yeah, I spoil him a bit , but he never has given me a bit of trouble even once .

While I agree that proper parenting is important, I don't think it is fair to thrust the responsibility of raising Dish's sub numbers on them.

It was just one of many theories. I personally think that the recent HOA crackdown on unsightly megadishes contributed significantly.

Believe it or not it actually worked. I always had a roll of 22 gauge hook up wire laying around for all my electronics projects. Eventually my dad made me go to radio shack, get a 50 foot coax cable, a long drill at the hardware store and did it the right way. Something about excess RF leakage

Wondering how long Dish can absorb these kinds of subscriber losses. I read in the team summit thread that various fees will increase which can only lead to more losses. It would seem this cannot go on forever without consequences.

Who knows?

Five at a minimum. I suspect MUCH longer. Granted, rural customers may pay more.

But in ten years, suspect you not more LEO Internet options?

It just gets to the point where you keep on raising prices to cover the losses.

They need to loose 3-4 million more customers and the churn will eventually even its self out.

I think Dish has come to the realization that the writing is on the wall and instead of trying to sign up more customers to off set the losses, it's just better to take the loss and move on.

All of these reasons are part of why I left. I just could not justify the overall cost any more and I was tired of paying for 200 channels I don't want. I switched to Playstation Vue three months ago and have not missed Dish yet.

My 21 year old son streams everything. He could care less about cable or satellite TV. He even doesn't care about OTA TV. Kids stream everything these days.
