Should we upgrade to a H3?

Hey everyone,

So, I've been reading the posts on the interface updates. Currently we have a H1 and a HWS (I like having my own DVR). The hubs uses the H1 and he doesn't adapt well to change (he's the "If it ain't broken, don't fix it" kinda guy). I'm concerned with the update on his H1 and the problems lots of people have encountered. I've been married to this man a long time, I like to anticipate and fix any issues BEFORE he gets mad or frustrated.

We're willing to do the upgrade on H1 but if I'm going to go through that, I might upgrade mine as well.

Questions:

If we upgrade both hoppers to H3's are able to do that without needed 2 dishes (I read that some people needed to 2 dishes)?

Can we upgrade just his and still keep mine if I decide to stick with the HWS?

Any issues with an EHD with old recordings on the H3? Did I read that the recordings from one DVR can be transferred to the H3? We both have recordings on our DVR's that I'll have to do something with because we don't want to lose them (unwatched stuff).

Also, I couldn't just upgrade mine (HWS) to see how it goes? If I understand it, we wouldn't be able to see the other DVR?

I'll take all the advice I can get, I appreciate the assistance.

Thanks!!
Maggie

Currently, you can't have an H3 and a previous version Hopper on the same account. But you could upgrade the H1 to an HWS and have two HWS on the one account. But then if you're not happy with the HWSes with the CUI interface, it could get a bit sticky moving to H3s so soon after a previous upgrade.

You might be best seeing if he tolerates the new CUI well on his H1. Like it or not, he's about to have change foisted upon him.

Two dishes are no longer needed in this situation.

Yes, moving stuff to an EHD works well. You can play from the EHD on another Hopper or transfer to another Hopper.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with EHD. I believe most issues with H3 have been resolved & stable now with the latest updates. You can transfer your current recordings to H3 via a USB connected hard drive with sufficient memory for large files & your current Dish DVR has this capability. We have one dish on the roof, never two, & used a Joey for a while but have since returned it as we didn't use it all that often.

We have a UHD TV (some call them 4k) & the H3 is a UHD receiver. This is the problem. There has been very little UHD programming from Dish & what programming they have had available had odd issues. The best was a broadcast of Planet Earth II series which was spectacular in UHD! But, sometimes the UHD channel worked & other times it didn't. Dish never figured it out as to why & not everyone had the same issue.

Another UHD show was a delayed broadcast of last summer's Olympics. It was mostly swimming & wrestling. The picture quality was as spectacular as swimming & wrestling can possibly be :) ;) . Tonight there is a boxing event in UHD but it's not clear if it's free or paid. The only other UHD has been fairly old movies (& not many of them for the last one & a half years) converted to UHD that cost about $8 PPV.

I'm very disappointed with the lack of UHD as other providers do have considerably more to offer. Last night I was watching a ESPN broadcast of a Canadian Football game & the CBC Sports announcer (?) mentioned to look for future games in UHD. There may not be much UHD available but there is SOME, but not on Dish as of yet!

Just my opinion. HTH

If he doesn't like or adapt to change well, the interface update isn't going to go well with him then. It's coming whether he likes it or not though. If you're considering upgrading to the H3, may as well make the best of it...

Yep, but wait until the update takes place. Then, you can suggest H3s because it's the same interface and you won't be in the doghouse for introducing it first! :)

Well, if it changes on his current equipment, he can't blame her. Reasonably. We've all been there.

If she changes the equipment BEFORE the CUI is forced upon him, he can say it's all her fault.

We've all been there.

Lol!! I have enjoyed the responses. Thanks for the advice. Amazon is delivering an EHD sometime today (gotta love free same day shipping for Prime members). I'll back his stuff up tonight while we sleep. Still wondering if I should back up mine too before the upgrade (my HWS). The EHD is a 1 TB. He has less taped than I do because mine is designated for Prime Time taping so there are lots of shows we are trying to catch up on. I think I can fit both on the one EHD. If I do that, then can I just put our separate recordings back on separate Hoppers?

Bobby's reply was exactly what I was thinking!! I have, nonetheless, warned him about the upcoming changes. Per my experience, he had a few choice words to say about this pending change.

We'll see how it goes, then I'll tell him about the upgrades (he hates spending money on stuff like this). If it's problematic, Mr. Grumpy call DISH and work out that deal. He's been known to let his frustration get the better of him and cancel service. That's how we wound up with Dish after being his annoyance with AT&T (prior to the merger).

Crap. I ordered an EHD for mac....

Will I be able to download the recordings with no difficulty after the update?

Ugh... I wish we would have had a choice on whether to uprgade or at least more notice.

The hopper formats the end to a “secret” format type anyway so it doesn’t mater if it’s for Mac or pc

Wait?!?! I can use this one (mac version) to back up, view from my current Hopper and then move the recordings to a new Hopper if necessary? Am I understanding you correctly?

I just thought of something. Will the update that happens nightly interfere with this?

A better solution would be 2 EHDs, his and hers. you can connect both to the new H3 so can see all of his old shows on one EHD and not be confused by your content. That way you won't fill up the new H3 hard drive on day 1 like I did.

I transferred everything from our H2 to an external HDD and after we got the H3, didn't transfer anything back. It ended up being more of a "just in case" backup.

That's a smart way to go provided you don't care to see those programs on DishAnywhere...

I have to ask, what did you order ? There's really no such thing other than the drive being pre-formatted to HFS+ format (which you can undo easily enough). I hope this "Mac" version didn't cost more 'cause it absolutely should not.
