Can you ask for upgrade to Reverse Band LNB & C61K Mini Client even if you don't have a 4K TV yet?

I have an HR54-500 with a couple of HR24-500s. The dish is an SL5 with a SWiM multi-switch.

Can I ask for an upgrade (to the above) so my system is ready when I purchase one on Black Friday?

You can, but techs are instructed not to install a 4k client unless you actually have a 4k tv.

There is a small group of 4k TVs that are not compatible with DTVs 4k and the client will verify compatibility when connected.

Nah ...

Your best alternative in this case is self-installation after purchase of a C61K from a 3rd party seller like Solid Signal, and get a RB LNB from ebay at a cheaper cost.

Actually, up here, everyone has been getting RB LNBs for some time now ... 4k or not.
You don't have to ask .... at least up here.

If I go with your recommendation, do I have to get the C61K authorized? Will DirecTV authorize a self-installed client?

They did for me, in June I bought a HR54, C61K, and a reverse band LNB online. I installed everything and called in told them I was replacing my HR34 it went smooth. When they activated the HR54 they said anything else I can help you with, sure is I need a new client added to my account. The first guy didn't know how to activate it and told me someone would call me in 72 hrs to do it. I said OK and hung up and called right back and got someone who knew what they were doing and in 5 minutes it was up and running.

And even if DIRECTV doesn't, if you buy the C61K from Solid Signal at least. They will also help you get around any static from DIRECTV to get it activated.

I don't think you will have any issues activating the C61k, particularly if you already have the HR54 on the account.
Fwiw, I don't believe that Solid Signal can activate anything, thats got to be done by D*. However they will help you along the way.

I just got a Genie 2 with two C61k clients as a free equipment upgrade. The tech installed a new RB LNB as part of install. I only have one 4K TV but the lack of a second one never came up.

Edit: Before anyone asks, yes, it required a new 2-year deal but they took $55/month off my bill for the first year (in addition to the $20 month they had given me about a month ago).

Then they should tell you these things when you order from them, I have ordered recvrs from them and never a mention.
Unless their policy has changed, there should have been a sticker on the box saying to call them to activate.
