Channel Master Targets Cord-Cutters With ‘Stream+’

Equally flawed as compared to what?

Flash memory has been used for years in security camera setups and the cards haven't worn out. I'd be willing to wager that this unit will become obsolete (by an official transition to Next Gen) before the cards wear out. The flaw is that the medium is just too expensive and will require too-frequent off-loading. The other downside is that if you're using the Stream+ to view digital camera content, you'll have to use some sort of adapter to read the camera's flash card.

Most standalone OTA DVRs that aren't TiVos probably don't implement buffering. We don't know enough about the Stream+ to understand if this is an issue.

I think I posted the adapter:

I think I posted the adapter:
In post #56. Are you asking if SD is any more suitable than MicroSD?

If so, it isn't any more suitable. The only thing that's different is the form factor. All of the internal stuff is pretty much the same (although the MicroSD cards seem to be mostly limited to 200GB).

My point was SD's are cheaper than MicroSDs. The + "reportedly" has MicroSD DVR capability. If the SD adapter I posted would work, one could have a 500gb SD DVR for around $200 rather than 400gb DVR for $400. Anyway, I ordered one should the + and it ever arrive. Right now I just own a bunch of vaporware. Really surprised they charge in full up front.

The likely fail of this approach is that you can get a tuner on Amazon for $35 that supports DVR features and add a 2TB hard drive for $100 and buy an established streaming solution (Roku, FireTV) that works with all services today for around $200 all in. It wouldn't be a single box solution, but it won't cause you to monkey around waiting for features to be implemented or services to be added (or not).

The Roamio OTA works with most everything, starts with 1TB of storage and is expandable and provides relatively robust guide service for $360. When you think about it, the Roamio OTA costs not a whole lot more than the SD cards would cost for the same amount of storage.

I prefer to have a separate streaming box as I reason that if something new comes along (i.e. HDR10+, Dolby Vision, HLG or a new streaming service), I can upgrade the streamer and I don't have to upset my OTA apple cart that doesn't need to change until a new broadcast standard comes along.

Roamio does not di 4K or DD+. Considered the Vox but subscription and clients are big bucks. What is the $35 tuner? Does it do 4k and DD+? If Plex runs on the +, i can use its guide and DVR.

True. The Roamio is available today and it does what it claims to do. UHD capable streaming boxes that support most of the must-have services are available too.
What is the $35 tuner?
Just a single tuner DTV (ATSC 1.0) box.
Does it do 4k and DD+?
It only does OTA tuning and DVR functions. It is not an end-to-end solution but when combined with a UHD streaming box it still costs about the same and it all works today.

Plex defeats the purpose of the Stream+. Don't confuse the Plex client (that may or may not run on the Stream+) with Plex Media Server. If you already have a PMS, the Stream+ isn't a supported tuner and you certainly don't need a standalone DVR.

There are shortcomings to a multi-box solution such as I have proposed but there are compromises in a box that doesn't support the services that deliver DD+ content and HDR UHD and requires such an extraordinary storage solution.

I'm not familiar enough with Google Live Channels to know where it is getting its guide data. Live Channels was announced in 2014 and I still haven't seen a working example up close. This page gives some insight:

Hands-On with USB Tuners in Live Channels - Android TV News

I've read that padding (start early, end late -- very important with ABC) is not available. I'm inclined to think they're working with PSIP data as opposed to a centralized database but would be happy to be proven wrong.

I did. Not sure why CM would deny any PlayStore app.
Netflix is getting more and more uppity about streamers that don't satisfy their demands for protection of intellectual property. After all, a lot of what Netflix is protecting is their own content.

I expect that many streaming boxes that have storage options will eventually be choked out by not getting app updates.

I can live with that. I'll stream just NetFlix from Fire TV or my LG TV. My big goal is DVR OTA locals and other schedule streaming channels.

Some examples of "other scheduled streaming channels" may be helpful.

I can't think of any live streaming TV channels that you can set up recordings for in the context of a DVR. Even with a laundry list of such channels, I'm not convinced that the DVR feature necessarily covers channels other than OTA.

Most OTT services I'm familiar with require their own app or that you use a web browser and I doubt that a DVR feature is going to mediate that connection at the level of this device.
