Only 5% of Dish subs get "premium" package

Data Reveals Subscriber Choices for Video Packages Among Major Pay-TV Providers - Telecompetitor

Kind of buried in there, so here is the pertinent section:

Researchers grouped pay-TV bundles into one of three categories: “premium bundles,” the “broad middle” and “limited basic.”

Charter and Altice USA’s legacy Cablevision offering tied for the highest percentage of customers taking a “premium bundle” that includes most cable networks plus HBO and at least one other premium channel. Both companies saw 43% of their subscribers taking these packages.

Following them, in descending order, were DirecTV (28%), Comcast (26%), Verizon (20%), AT&T U-verse (19%), Cox (15%) and Dish (5%). Mediacom doesn’t offer what MoffettNathonson considers a “premium bundle.”
 
Really? I have the AEP plus the movie package and I find it difficult to believe I'm one of only 5% (or less) of Dish subscribers with the AEP.

In a world with so many different options, streaming, and cord-cutting a daily topic, I don't see it as that surprising, honestly. I think most would get a lesser main package like AT120/AT200, then add the one movie channel package of their choice, like HBO. I wouldn't think the AEP with ALL movie channels would be that attractive anymore, even if they did advertise it more than they do.
 
I'm more surprised that 43% of Charter customers sub to a premium package. I am not surprised that AT&T Uverse is 19%. The pricing on their packages is awesome.

In some areas at least, cable packages are more limited than what we are used to for satellite packages. I know for the longest time in this area, the local cable company had basically two options...basic and premium. Basic was very limited (think Dish's Welcome Pack + locals) and you had to get the latter to get many of the mainstream channels you would expect.

saw 15 dollars as premium package via dish for hbo
u can buy hbo alone for 15 bucks tho on its own website.

oh and showtime offer 5 dollars premium and starz 5 bucks for there offer.

I plan on getting America’s Everything Pack and Dish Movie Pack once my free trial of the premiums and Dish Movie Pack is over. But right now it’s just America’s Top 250 for me.

Right now I still have HBO, but I probably will drop it in Sept when the price goes up. Dish does have several premiums in the AT250 & Movie Pack though. Charter Cable here does not give TMC or Encore in their latest regular packs. The sub has to buy a premium pack. So Dish may be a bit unique in that regard.
 
Dish 200 beats most if not all other similar packages or to put another way is just about equivalent to their highest tier any premiums included aside. So not surprising at all the Top250 is not sold more. To get just about all the cable channels the Top200 is all that is needed.
There is no way possible only 5% get HBO or one of the premium movie packs and/or the DISH Movie Pack particularly when they have been at reduced prices for a long time, granted sometimes on and off.
I'll up Navychop, if you believe those numbers I'll give you a great deal on a used transporter only used to transport five people from a Romulan vessel twice.

For purposes of the study quoted in the original post, a "premium package" is a bundle that includes most of the basic cable channels plus at least one premium movie service. For Dish, that would be America's Everything Pack. Considering that, the 5% number seems plausible.
 
I am surprised anyone is buying premiums anymore. I got on an deal a month or two back for HBO and Cinemax for 5 dollars for 6 months. You know what I am not finding it worth that. I just checked and currently the average show on any of the HBO or CM channels is 8.4 years old and I would imagine you could check pretty much anytime and come up with a similar number. The value just does not seem to be there to me.

A couple of weeks ago Dish had a free HBO/Cinemax weekend. I checked the guide for the entire weekend and there wasn't a single thing worth recording, not one thing, it was virtually all older stuff. Why would anyone pay for that?

I used to pay for HBO each year for a couple of months in order to watch Game of Thrones. I wonder if HBO knows how much that show made for them.
