Univision Deportes Dropped as Dish Dispute Widens

I figured with the local channel slot now now totally gone, the chances that Univision coming back is pretty unlikely. I guess there are four choices, sub to the $5.95 streaming service, change to Direct or Cable, watch it OTA is possible, or do without. This may be the future for us. But once Dish permanently loses one of the main nets (If that happens), more people will change providers. I guess some have left because of HBO/Cinemax as well as Univision.
In a select few markets, Locast is also an option. Like I have said before, I eagerly await this option coming to the Cleveland, Ohio market, and being added to the Dish receivers. Of course, as far as Univision, this may all be a moot point if another company buys our local affiliate and flips it to a different network, and then that company strikes a deal with Dish to return WQHS to our local package.

Locast I am hoping will be coming to the Portland market in the near future. There are a couple other companies that are looking into a similar service. Another thing, I am hoping Diginets will be available in streaming. There are a few like The Comet, Charge!, etc.

I’d guess that those folks that would leave over HBO or Univision have already left. Done deal. Very little incentive to bring that programming back now.

I suppose their loss may impact new subscribers to some degree, but there doesn’t seem to be many of them anyway.

I think it WILL give pause to content owners in the future, as they see Dish will actually drop content.

Univision yes, I think they've left already but those who are affected by the HBO take down won't feel it hard until Game Of Thrones comes back. :)

I feel like Dish is saving a lot of money for itself by severing ties with Univision and HBO. So why is there still a $5 price increase on most of these packages?

If these programming moves were really for the benefit of us, then shouldn't they be rewarding us with a flat (0%) increase next year to show us just how "valued" we are?

Just playing devil's advocate here.

He said it is not likely Univision will be back. We will see after the lawsuit. In a few years.
Well, on the 54.0 remote, the voice command "Univision" still works to change to channel 270 (DPLCL) so we will see how much longer that lasts. Dish is also putting the exact same programming on channel 309 as a "replacement" for HBO Latino. So, HBO subscribers who had already lost Univision from their basic package basically got nothing to replace HBO Latino. Cinemax subscribers did not even get that much, since Dish did not even bother to put DPLCL on channel 315. (Unless Cinemax subscribers are also getting DPLCL on channel 309 SD.)

The expected loss of the $5 per month Univision credit is a $5 per month increase in and of itself. Now you are saying that there is going to be another $5 per month increase on top of that? :eeek

If you can't or won't stream yes. Otherwise for the same cost you can get the same programming online. If I decide to get HBO again I could do it from my Smart TV, Tivo, Fire Stick, Computer, and on and on. I may decide to just save the $15 a month now that I have gone without it.
I did not think I would go without HBO but "but, here we are." :)

If there is a $5 increase coming in 2019, I think more will jump ship. We lose channels and we may more. That is not fair. I could understand an increase if Dish kept Univision, HBO, etc and we had to pay more. The always excuse is that Dish has these disputes to keep our pricing down. Okay, if that is the case, then Dish does not have the channel, and we continue to pay more? Where is a logic in that? I read a lot about the cord cutters and they pay much less. I am hoping as more channels are available in streaming packages, I can move in that direction in time, if prices continue to go up, especially with the loss of channels.

It isn't sustainable. I'm afraid they're following the typical corporate business model of "Suck all the profit you can out of it until it dies." Like newspapers.

I'm really sad to see this happening. I thought Dish would try to position itself as a niche carrier.

Now it appears they are just cannibalizing themselves and wishing for a slow painful death.

Around here streaming is pretty much a luxury that not many have access to so more than a few customers are going to DirecTV if HBO isn't back by G.O.T. time.

HBO is an extra cost add-on in most packages, so it's mostly independent of the general programming increases. I would guess whatever relatively small amount Dish is saving without Univision doesn't come close to making up for the annual increases included in all the other carriage contracts.

Apparently, Dish is saving $5 per month per subscriber by not carrying the Univision channels, since they are making the $5 reduction in price "permanent" for most Latino packages (and eliminating the separate line-item credit for Univision on the bill) except for the two upper tiers, which have a $3 increase to offset the $5 decrease, resulting in a decrease of only $2 per month.

Yes. There is a thread going about 2019 price increases right now
Thanks, I'll check that out.
Okay, so it is not quite as bad as I thought. The elimination of the $5 per month Univision credit for Latino Bonus Pack comes with a $5 per month reduction to the regular price, so the price of that package remains the same. However, the new wrinkle is that there will be a $3 per month increase for Flex Pack, and a chance to get grandfathered for a $4 per month savings on Welcome Pack by switching before the deadline. I have always said that any price increase on Flex Pack would cause me to switch back to Welcome Pack, and the incentive to go ahead and switch now is greater than it has ever been. If I get to keep the separate $10 per month credit for 12 months that Dish agreed to give me, even after switching to Welcome Pack, then that would be a significant reduction to my Dish bill for the remainder of the 12 months until that credit runs out.

Do we know what the number of Latino subscribers is? It looks to me like Dish is making up the $5 price reduction with the $5 they're no longer paying Univision. A fair trade-off I would think. Subscribers don't pay the $5 and Dish doesn't either.
