Does RAID 1 actually WORK for Hopper 3 as a dependable and usable backup in case 1 RAID drive fails?

I have a Dish Network Hopper 3

If 1 of the 2 drives in the external RAID 1 fails

And then you plug the other good drive directly into the hopper 3, doesn’t the Hopper 3 just automatically ERASE it and reformat it?

Therefore you will NOT have your usable back up.

And you’ve just LOST ALL of your recordings?

I really Really REALLY want to have my Hopper 3 recording’s backed up somehow!!!

I’m thinking about buying a 4 TB Western Digital My Book Duo

I was hoping that if I hook it up as a RAID 1 it will provide me with the dependable and usable BACK UP that I want so badly.

BUT will this back up be USABLE when 1 drive fails?

Or will it just get ERASED and reformatted when plugged back into the Hopper 3?

Please help me… I really need someone’s help… I’m pretty smart… But I’m no expert

I am aware of the option of a RAID 1 hooked up independently into a customizable external hard drive enclosure

As opposed to buying the factory made encased Western Digital 4TB My Book Duo.

But either way DOES this work?

Will this work for me?

I need 100% assurance that my Hopper 3 recordings are backed up and fully recoverable, dependable and usable!!!

If 1 of the RAID 1 drives fail and I go to the other good drive to recover my recordings

Will it just get ERASED and reformatted by the Hopper 3?

Is it EVEN POSSIBLE to back up Hopper 3 recordIngs?

Has anyone ever done this successfully?

After 1 of the hard drive fails in a RAID 1

I don’t care how I back up the Hopper 3 recordings.

I just want the recordings backed up somehow.

It doesn’t have to be RAID 1 or whatever.

please Please PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Thank You!!!

External drives are for archiving, not backup. You have to transfer, not copy recordings. No matter what, you only have one copy of any recording. I use a WD RAID 1 external drive and expect it to operate transparently if one of the duplicate drives fail.

I have multiple copies of selected recordings (usually movies), they're on different EHD's.

Thank you sir…

Hopefully your RAID 1 external works in case of drive failure

I’d love to hear from someone who’s actually seen this work

because if one drive fails then the second drive has to be recognized by the hopper 3 at some point

and it seems like the hopper 3 would erase and reformat that drive and you would lose your recordings

Has anybody out there actually seen this work?

Thanks

Please Help!!!

Thank you sir…

I’m assuming to get multiple copies of the same movies on different external hard drive‘s you had to re-record them and transfer them to these hard drives…

Am I correct?

I would just love to have a dependable redundant back up in case of raid 1 failure

Anybody out there?

Is it even POSSIBLE to back up your hopper 3 recordings without re-recording them and moving them to external drives?

Thank you all!!!

What I did to get multiple copies of any recordings I wanted to save is pretty simple. First I use a 4 port hub so I have 4 EHD's. Record the event. Turn on one EHD. transfer the event to it. Turn the EHD off and turn on another EHD. Record the event again. Transfer the event to the 2nd EHD. Yes, it's a couple of extra steps but it works well.

Afterwards, you can even have both EHD's turned on each with he same recordings without any issues. That said, I don't think it's possible to backup the Hoppers HD because it would entail making copies of the contents, something Dish doesn't allow. DRM and all that.

BTW, have you considered or tried one of those external RAID 1 HD enclosures? I don't see why that wouldn't work. I think the Hopper should see it as a single EHD.

Hello

It’s so nice that you responded

thank you so much

I guess it’s basically impossible to back up the hopper 3 recording’s without recording the same thing twice and all of that.

I’ve searched other threads people seem to try really hard and sometimes end up losing their recordings or whatever

I just hate not having my recordings backed up somehow and being at the mercy of an external hard drive failure

And the thought of recording everything twice doesn’t sound like an easy or fun way to have a back up

If you or anyone else out there knows anybody that might be able to help me out would be very much appreciated!!!

Thank You All!!!

let’s say I had this EHD enclosure you just mention with let’s say 5 hard drives hooked up to it

with the hub connected to the hopper

the issue I think would remain the same

you would have to record something twice to get the same recording to exist on at least two separate hard drive‘s (aka: back up)

Am I wrong?

Deeper, please find your space bar and stop using the return key to separate your sentences. Your posts look like poetic verse... ;)

Hello sir…

Are you saying yes as an answer to the question in the thread’s subject line?

or are you saying yes to the question at the end of my most previous post?

Thanks

Mr. deeper
I think he is saying yes to my post about your lack of use of the space bar instead of the return key to separate your sentences.... ;)

The external drive has a raid controller in it that presents the storage to the Hopper as a single external drive. The Hopper has no idea of the underlying architecture. If one drive fails then the data is still accessible because the other drive copy is still there. The external drive should do some health checks to know if one disk has a problem. At that point however you need to replace the failed drive and let the mirror rebuild itself. That is how it is supposed to work and it wouldn’t be much of a high availability solution otherwise.

As others have said, raid 1 isn’t a backup, it is simply storage redundancy in case the failure is specific to the storage media. If you delete something, it deletes from both copies or if there is some kind of issue with the Hopper, it could wipe you out. Aside from buying the tv shows that you like and making your own copies, there is no real guarantee. The next gen Hopper might not support the external drive format of the current Hopper. That said, the raid 1 enclosure should provide some additional peace of mind that your external disk won’t be the cause of data loss.

the hopper will not recognize a 4tb drive, seems 2 4tb drives for sure will not work.
there is a way to backup movies and shows, in linux, (just did this a few weeks ago, on a 4tb drive that wasn't recognized)

i have seen superblock issues with dish 722k and earlier, and this time the hopper 3 moved my stuff to a lost&found folder, i had to move it back.
everything is working and nothing was lost.

could do a backup regiment, weekly, or whatever for archived shows and movies, then if the crap hits, restore the data. (unplug drive from the hopper, plug into computer, run imaging software, bring back to the hopper. )

ext4 i believe it is and linux is fun with permissions,

Hello sir

thank you so much for the very serious and detailed response

before I posted my question I had already bought three 2 TB Western Digital my book single hard drives

I haven’t even opened the big box yet at all so I guess I can return them and buy three 4TB my book hard drives and set them up as RAID 1

I just wanted to make sure that it would definitely work and you’re posting really helped me a lot

Exactly what did you mean in your last sentence of your first paragraph about high availability solution?

Has anybody out there actually seen this work in the real world with a hard drive failure in the raid 1?

again thank you so very very much for you’re very helpful response

thank you

Hello sir

Actually it appears that western digital my book 4TB in RAID 1 DOES work from a couple reports I’ve read here

that’s really great to hear that you discovered an alternative way to make it work but I’m not quite technically advanced enough to do that

I’m pretty smart when it comes to Mac but I never used Linux but that sure was very interesting to hear you’ve made this work

Very very very interesting indeed I just wish I had the skills to do it

Based on what the most recent postings have said what do you think about the 4 TB Western Digital my book RAID 1 solution?

Does everything sound correct to you do you concur that it appears that this will work?

I really appreciate you responding to my post

thank you very much

Hello sir

could you please explain a little bit further of what you meant when you said that two 4 TB hard drive’s will not work

I know the hopper 3 can handle 3 external hard drive plugged into it directly

and if you had three 4 TB my book hard drives plugged into the hopper 3 in a RAID 1 I don’t see why it wouldn’t work

does anybody out there agree with me or have anything else to offer would be really really appreciated

Thanks to everyone for all their help this is really amazing that someone is actually helping me

Thank you

take care

God bless mr. deeper

Correction....it’s not a single 4 TB hard drive it’s a western digital my book 4TB DUO to be hooked up as a RAID 1

ahh, its 2x2TB drives, yep that has a better shot of working,
a 4tb drive was not seen, but 2tb will work just fine.

give it a try, go purchase one, plug it in and move a show and see what happens. should be good.
what are you trying to archive ??
