VIP 722k Receivers Still Available?

So my parents, who have been on DISH for years now, just had the VIP 722k DVR on their main TV finally go out after a few years of slightly flaky behavior. Hard drive failure, natch. Customer support has told us that they have no more 722 receivers available to replace theirs, so their only choices are:

  • upgrade to Hopper, which entails a new 24-month contract at pricing that isn't nearly as good as what they'd get as a new DirecTV customer signing their 24-month contract
  • buy a VIP 722 receiver (from a source other than DISH, I guess) to replace their faulty one
  • cancel DISH service completely
Can anyone verify if this is true? If they're going to have to sign a new 24-month contract, they'll just switch to DirecTV with whole-home Genie. But if DISH could just swap out, at no charge, their broken 722k for one that functions, while leaving everything else on their account the same (same price, no new contract), then they'd probably go that route.

I upgraded to a H3 and still have my 722 (not K) since I own it. The install tech claimed I couldn't sell it any longer. I too checked here and people didn't know other than to agree with the tech. I also had two leased 612's which the tech captured and said he was trashing. :crying

You can still sell that 722, it can be activated on non-Hopper accounts.

The promotional price for DirecTV is for the first 12 months of the 24 month contract. After that the price will go up quite a bit.

With that new 24 month Dish contract will come a 24 month price lock also.

How many TVs do they have? The Wally with an EHD is a nice replacement for the ViP receivers.

Dish Depot has older receivers. You might check them out.

Yes, that's true. Dish is offering them a $15/mo discount off their current bill plus a price-lock for the full 24-month contract period, so their new bill would be $107/mo plus tax for 2 TVs if they upgrade to Hopper. That's a total of $2568 over the two years.

Meanwhile, for the similar package they would want on DirecTV (Choice package) with whole-home Genie DVR on 2 TVs, they would pay $58.64/mo the first year, then $118.64/mo the second year. But they would also get a $200 Costco gift card up front. That comes to a net two-year total of $1927.36, or an average monthly cost of $80.31.

I was hoping that they could keep the status quo with Dish for a few more months until DirecTV rolls out the forthcoming streaming version of their service with an included box and cloud DVR. Depending on the specifics and pricing, that might be a better option for them than satellite. But it looks like the hard drive failure on their old 722k DVR may be forcing them to make a choice now.

They are lying or are just clueless. I have 5 in my own inventory and our warehouse has 2 pallets of them. And that's just my office. 722's are still available and still being installed in certain instances

Thanks, good to know. Are you with Dish or are you an independent seller or installer? I'm wondering what the best way is to get a replacement 722k shipped to my parents. Try calling Dish tech support?

I work for a Sub-Contracted Regional Service Provider, although that doesn't matter. We order our stuff from the same warehouses in Atlanta and Colorado that Dish Internal offices do

I was quoted $10/month when I upgraded and extended the existing customer promotion. YMMV

OK, called back to Dish and was escalated to a more senior tech support rep and, after she tried her best to get them to upgrade to Hopper, she agreed to ship out a replacement VIP722k DVR for a $15 shipping charge. But I did get her to credit a week of free service for the disruption. They don't even want the old 722 with the busted hard drive sent back to them, so I guess it's going into the landfill.

This will keep them with Dish, contract-free, for at least a little while longer. I know that there will be some new streaming TV services coming out from DirecTV and T-Mobile in the next few months and one of those might be a good option for them longer-term.
 
We recently had trouble with a vip 222. The tech replaced it with a 722, because 222's are no longer available. However, since it wasn't replacing a DVR, Dish had to send a hit to disable the DVR functions.

I’m sure they would want it back if you where canceling since you would pay to ship it back
