The official documentation from Dish states that the EHD needs to have its own power source. That being said, I have used EHD's without a power source and they will work, but it is not officially supported.

Sorry comfortably_numb. I am on the phone. This EHD says it has power built in. I have the 2 TB version connected to my Uncles Wally in his RV.

Understand that. The EHD (Seegate) in the DISH Tailgate site says it doesn't need power supply. So I got the Seegate 2TB version from Best Buy several months ago for $70.00. It works good the last time I talked to my Uncle about it.

I'm using a Samsung 500 GB portable SSD as I didn't want the noise of spinning rust. So far so good. I don't record much so the capacity seems adequate.

Looking over the Wally manual I noted that it was written about five years ago and SSD drives have come a long way in that time so I figured the manual is a bit dated in that regard.

The only caveat to SSD's is the constant writing and rewriting to the buffer that may wear out the chips.

Even if you haven't set a recording, it is recording the "live" buffer so you can skip back.
