Fiber optic cables.
Out of all of the options, fiber is the weakest and least likely to survive. They're dirt cheap but support is fading fast.

Discussion of S/PDIF died off because we thought you got the point. Silly us.

In case you're thinking that fiber optics are the future, know that S/PDIF cables are more like monofilament fishing line than the medium used in fiber optic light pipes.

Toshlink was great for eliminating hum caused by ground issues. I'm sure all the older stereo people remember the dreaded hum. COAX to toshlink and Toshlink to coax converters were very simplistic and easy for manufacturers to include in their equipment. (or for people with electronics knowledge to make)
