Charlie thinks DISH and DIRECTV should merge.

I think we're all overlooking the fact that Charlie did not say Dish and DTV SHOULD merge, instead he said that a merger was "inevitable". Typical of CCN, their headline is a little more dramatic than the facts.

To me, the word "inevitable" seems much stronger, or more dramatic, than CCN's title stating that Charlie "thinks" they "should merge". Charlie is saying that the eventual combo of DISH and DirecTV seems like it WILL happen at some point, that it's unavoidable.

so data centers, cerver upgrades, fiber backhauls, ect dont cost anything?
i would wager its cheaper to maintain a sat than a streaming center

The costs are more then just maintaining a sat and you know it, designing and building a satellite, launching, then after that is the costs involved in installing for the customers, truck rolls for problems, namely employees, it is every corporations dream to reduce the workforce, no more paying them, no more health insurance, no more pensions, etc, etc.

When I was part of that corporate world, I remember the meetings where they were talking about increasing profits and the first thing was always reducing the workforce ( never us suits by the way), I could not believe how they talked about human beings like they were just on a piece of paper to be crossed off like they do not matter.

The article also seems to think only people without good Internet access are satellite subscribers, which is of course not the case at all. As for competition if a Dish/DTV merger does occur, there will still be cable TV and Internet available to many sat subscribers, plus the Orby startup if they survive. And affordable high speed rural Internet access could become a widespread reality when Starlink goes live over the next year or two. How many times have we seen posts here discussing switching to cable due to some dissatisfaction with sat TV? It happens every time there's another retrans dispute, so there would still be competition for a merged sat TV company in some form...

I often find CordCutters News to be quite sensational as well, with little real ‘news.’ Not long back they had ‘breaking news’ from 6 months ago about the Nexstar/Tribune merger and some sales of existing stations Nexstar had to sell to Tegna. It’s usually big hype with little real information at that site. Much more speculation than anything.

CCN is all about page clicks... That and hating on AT&T.

when dish fails to build out thier spectrum, att will pick that up cheap, then directv will buy dish :)

Whether DISH and DIRECTV should merge is not the question. DISH has no more money to even think about buying or merging with DIRECTV. They have all their money tied up in the new Wireless cell phone service that they are supposed to build out in the next 3 years. Unless he can get DIRECTV at a fire sale Charlie won't be pushing too hard to take on even more debt.

AT&T has stated they are not interested in any acquisitions in the next few years. Part of the debt reduction plan, this seems unlikely.

When you are $180 Billion in debt, it kinda puts a hold on new acquisitions.

If they ( DirecTV ) continues to have to same sub losses in 2020 ( or more) as 2019, someone will be able to get it pretty cheap ( if anyone wants a company that has no future per what AT&T has said about the Satellite Company).

I think AT&T will want to unload DirecTV after they get AT&T TV running and at least some of their subscriber base shifts over. But as pointed out, it's questionable whether DISH will want to, or be able to, purchase DirecTV given all the other debt they'll take on to build out 5G.

I still think some kind of spin-off/merger situation is possible, where both companies spin off their satellite TV businesses into one newly formed separate company that owns and operates both DISH and DirecTV and then merges the brands together somehow. Whether the government would allow it, I don't know, but it would obviously keep satellite TV propped up as a viable consumer option for longer than would be the case if both operations continued to compete against one another as separate businesses.

I agree with Charlie that a Dish/DTV merger is likely inevitable, but I think we should keep in mind when tossing around money issues with either company, that we're probably talking a few years down the road before it becomes an issue. That could change the financial picture quite a bit in either direction.

Charlie (Dish) has done a better job on keeping subs compared to AT&T. I have been with Dish 21 years and I have been happy with them for the most part.
If a merger does happen, would the nationwide dropping off of ABC be restored. Directv has it on their lineup before this so called merger could/would happen. If the merger does happen, would Dish order it off? I would love to see it restored on Dish, but doubtful that it will happen.

Just remember. Inevitable doesn't mean soon. In this case, I think it's inevitable, but years away.
