A couple of questions from a video hoarder concerning a possible move from a 722 to a Hopper Duo. Apparently I can get this upgrade with little or no cost from what I hear. Would they just send me the hopper? I was told I can still keep the 722, which is nearly full of saved programs. I also have a couple of external hard drives full of programming. Will my 722 saved programming be lost after I switch, or would it still be there if I just wanted to plug it back in and watch those? I'm pretty sure the ext hard drives would still be okay, but what about the programming on the 722 hard drive? Thanks for any help!

You will need to move those recordings off of your 722 to a new EHD. You will want to do that before you do the change.
Thanks! I was afraid of that. I didn't have much luck last night doing a quick search for 2tb ext desktop hard drives. Would like to find something for less than $80 if possible.

I got a 6TB external Seagate for $80 the last time I had to grab a good storage deal. I do not know what a 722 would do with a 6TB disk. Remember, once you move stuff back onto your Duo, you can repurpose your 6TB disk for something else.

I've wondered about that, since there was always a 2TB limit as far as what you could use with the Dish DVR. It appears the Duo is also 2TB, so I wouldn't want to clog it up with what I've got on the 722. I would just leave that on the external hard drive. That's a decent price for a 6TB for sure. They seem to be easier to find than a 2TB these days, as far as desktop models.

You’d be happier with a Hopper 3 than a duo.

I may look into the Hopper 3 if the cost is around the same. I don't really need to send the signal to another room, just 2 TVs in the same room. I'm a little confused about the storage limits on the 3, as I've also seen 2TB listed (without the use of those Joeys, whatever they are.)

Back to one question I had in the original post. Would they just send me the new Hopper? I assume there's not much involved for me to set it up on my own.

I do hope to get one of these on Amazon, as I have money from gift cards there. I've just never bought anything "refurbished." I'd like to see a price much less than this for a refurbished product.

I have bought a bunch of refurb electronics over the year. With one exception on a desktop PC there have been no issues. On the PC it was created with about a 30 Min phone call. The replacement I got was even a step up and no added cost and shipped overnight. That was with Dell. The risk you run is that if you move your dish programming to it and it fails it is lost too. That being said it can happen with a new one too. On the WE web site, you can get a new 3TB for not much more. Doesn't look like they sell a 2TB any more.

Joeys do not have storage. They use the Hopper DVR. If you want two TVs fed I dependents, you’ll need a Hopper and a Joey.
Okay, thanks. I just need to run the signal to one TV for now, but I need to look into those Joeys at some point. I was sometimes frustrated with not being able to run a second high def signal (with the second tuner) to my other TV from the 722.

I bought a 2TB WD recertified for an EHD once. It lasted a few days out of the limited warranty. Lost all the recordings. FWIW

So if I HAD to get a 3TB or larger, it wouldn't make any difference? I've just never done that with anything larger than a 2TB since Dish had said that's the limit.

It will be seen as a 2TB. This appears to be a chipset limitation.

There are no new Hoppers, except maybe for a few Duos.

I use hardware RAID arrays for the more important stuff. But I realize not many will go to that expense.

I am not sure about that. have a 722K and have 2 TB drives in use. If you go larger I do not know if it will not work or it will work but only use 2TB of the space. I am sure someone knows but I do not.

First of all, since Dish is letting you keep the 722, those recordings on its internal hard drive will still work just fine after it is deactivated. I have plenty of experience using my old deactivated 722k's for precisely this purpose.

You should be aware that the Hopper 3 would cost an extra $5 per month in fees ($15 Hopper 3 DVR fee, vs. only $10 per month for the Hopper Duo). Additionally, Dish would likely charge you a $100 upgrade fee up-front for the Hopper 3, instead of the low-cost (or no-cost) upgrade to the Hopper Duo.

I can tell you from my own personal experience that it is very easy to do the upgrade from a 722 to a Hopper Duo yourself, especially if you are not adding a Joey. Just unhook the cable from the separator on the back of the 722, hook it up to the Hopper Duo, and run a Test Installation check. It is that simple.

Having said that, Dish would probably not allow you to do the upgrade yourself if you get the Hopper Duo from them. They seem to insist on sending an installer for any such upgrades. If you would be interested in purchasing a Hopper Duo so you can do the upgrade yourself, I have one that I am not using, that I can sell you cheap. Send me a PM if you are interested. I also have a 1TB external hard drive that I know for sure will work with both a 722 and a Hopper Duo, if you would be interested in purchasing it also. I downsized my Dish system recently, so my extra equipment is just taking up space here, not being used. I would like to see it go to a good home. :)
