Hello everyone,
My name is Signe and need some suggestions.
Currently I have the DNW VIP612, I think.
Anyway, Dish says I qualify for an upgrade to the Hopper system.
My current receiver, to me, seem to have great quality picture.
Does anyone know if the Hopper 3 shows a great picture quality?
or should I just stay with what I have currently??
All suggestion will be appreciated.

Do you really think a receiver that's over a decade newer than yours now wouldn't have better quality?

I would switch without hesitation. So many reasons: Ability to record so many shows at the same time, huge hard drive, an old electronic device finally dying, ability to pause a recorded show and start again on a different tv in a different room (assuming u get Joeys, too). 10 bucks a month to lease a Hopper 3 (I believe it still is) is not too bad.

The one reason I would think of for not doing the upgrade would be if Dish is trying to lock you into a new two-year contract, if you are not sure that you will actually want to stay with Dish that much longer. Is Dish offering you the Hopper 3 for no upfront cost? Or are they offering a different model of Hopper for free, with the option to pick a Hopper 3 instead for an additional fee?

One other reason for possibly not doing the upgrade would be the increase in the DVR fee. With your ViP612, I assume that you are still grandfathered at the old $7 per month rate. Any regular Hopper model (1, 2, or 3) would have a regular-priced $15 per month DVR fee. (I am not sure if Dish is offering you an introductory reduced rate of $10 per month or not. Even if they are, the rate will still increase to $15 when that offer expires.) On the other hand, the Hopper Duo has a regular-priced DVR fee of only $10 per month.

Any Hopper (even the Hopper Duo) would give you more recording capabilities than you currently have, plus the ability to access internet-streaming channels directly through your satellite receiver. If you would like to stick with the limit of two tuners that you currently have, still gain access to the internet-streaming channels, and eliminate the monthly DVR fee completely, then a Wally plus an external hard drive could also be a good option for you.

If you would like to purchase a Hopper Duo or Wally so that you can do the upgrade yourself and avoid the two-year contract, then I have them for sale in the Classifieds section on this site, cheap! I also have a purchased ViP612 available if you would prefer to stick with what you are used to using, and you ever need a replacement receiver.

DISH does not charge a lease fee on their receivers.
Technically, they do, for tax purposes. (Some states charge sales tax on the lease fee.) The fee is bundled in as part of the price of the programming package. This means that everyone across the entire country pays the same lease fee though, regardless of whether your state requires it or not, and regardless of whether you are actually leasing the receiver or using a purchased receiver.

More technically, it's a service fee. You're paying for a service (DVR functionality, or additional TV service in another room), and you're being taxed on that service payment.

I still have VIP receivers by choice. That said the Hopper is overall a great receiver though not without some problems. But those problems alone is not what keeps me from getting it.
If you are grandfathered on fees you will not be if you go to the Hopper. So I pay $7 for a DVR fee much lower per month than if I go to the Hopper so I have to factor that in.
Second I am big on having a back-up. So while I have nowhere near as many tuners to record as I would with a Hopper, if the Hopper has a problem I have a problem of no Sat TV. With two Vip's of which I only pay for one I have as many tuners as I happen to need, 6. (4 sat 2 OTA) And if one receiver dies I still have another.
Third my VIPs have become rock solid despite - or maybe because of - no updates for them anymore. Very reliable.

Fourth is not a reason for me not to get it may be for you. As mentioned already it is likely you will have to sign a two year contract. I happily sign them saving alot on the packages so no problem for me.
So if you can get it for no upgrade fee, or that fee is ok with you and/or a two year contract you will get probably the best receiver for watching TV there is. But it comes at a cost.

As Columbo says, just one more thing... I do think from setting up the Hopper for my Daughter using my TV because it was before she moved in her things to her house, the picture does seem a little sharper.

Crodrules, thank you for the detailed explanation If I recall the young lady conversation regarding the upgrade, I would be locked into a 24 month contract with Dish. The contract doesn't matter as long as there are no surprise charges jumping up out of the blue.
Regarding the Hopper receiver system, I don't think it is the H3 you all have mentioned here.
I will call into Dish and get more exact details of what actual receiver I would get if I did upgrade.

You mentioned a Hopper 3 (H3) in your original post. Do not agree to anything if it is not a Hopper 3.
True, but it also said that they offered "an upgrade to the Hopper system." That left it vague enough that it could have been any Hopper (despite the follow-up question about the H3) which is why I offered a detailed explanation of all of the possible options. If I had to guess, I would think that Dish is offering the original poster a free upgrade to a Hopper Duo, or a more expensive upgrade to a higher model. I am curious to find out the exact details, though.

and the crux of my post was “Do not agree to anything if it is not a Hopper 3.” It can be as complicated as you want it to be but the bottom line is that the Hopper 3 is the best way to go.
Of course, if it is not a Hopper 3, and if Signe does not agree, then Signe is still stuck with a ViP612. Do you still think that is the best way to go? ;) :D

Like I said earlier, there is a $9 per month lease fee for the first receiver bundled into the price of every programming package, whether you are actually leasing them or not. It is listed in the fine print on page 2 of your monthly Dish bill.
