Self install Orby TV using old FTA dish

Hi all, been away for a while. Just learned of Orby TV and decided to try and do a self install using an old FTA dish that had not been used in a long time. It was already installed and peaked on 97W. After some trouble shooting I got it working again. That done (now know I have a working dish/LNB) I setup this morning to try and find 117W. I know it was going to be hard as it is very close to Dish on 119W after some work I found a satellite on the audio meter but the Orby receiver did not show anything. Hooked up an old Pansat 3500 FTA receiver and sure enough it found lots of encrypted transponders. At this point I was quite sure I was on 119W. So I puts some marks on the mast and moved the dish a tick to the left/south. After some trial and error the signal meter on the Orby receiver started to come to life. It was really quite hard to find 117W but as soon as I did things started to roll. The receiver downloaded an update and after it was done I went back to settings and re-peaked the dish. Got a solid signal with the old FTA dish. Below are some pictures of the at dish setup. It was a challenge but rewarding to get it going.

Congratulations on a succesful setup. Always nice when things work out the way you expected. :) :thumbup

Welcome to Orby. I have it too, it keeps the wife happy! I have mine on a GEOSATpro dish.

Just got my login sorted out - delta_charlie and delta_charlie2 are the same person (Dale Coleman)

It may be true that using only the Orby receiver would have been better but in my case there was a LNB vertical vs horizontal issue I was trying to sort out. Before I moved the dish from 97W I was only getting H transponders. When I did not see any activity on the Orby receiver I thought perhaps the LNB was bad. The problem turned out to be the Pansat 3500 receiver as it showed 20 volts DC on both H and V. The Orby tested at 13 volts. Hooking the Pansat back up let me verify I was on the wrong sat. I was getting ready to skew the LNB 90 degrees thinking it may be stuck on H but then the Orby receiver meter came to life and I then knew the LNB was ok. It turned out to be a great learning experience and I glad I gave it a go.

So far I'm very pleased with Orby TV really like how they cut out some of the fat - for me getting the locals by OTA is much better and it's nice to save on the cost. OTA lets me get all the sub channels and here in central (flat) florida there are a lot! If your grandparents get good local OTA reception they should be very pleased with Orby.

I just pulled up the full size picture of your TV - wow, what a nice old TV! Orby receiver does have a OTA digital tuner so you can tune in the current stuff.

Yep. I use one of those Blonder Tongue agile modulators (set to analog channel 9) connected to rabbit ears to feed it, and so I can watch other vintage TVs all around the house. Like my own personal TV station. In fact I hook up my FTA receiver to the modulator so I could use a Sony Watchman to check my signal as I'm pointing/peaking my dish. The TV in the picture is an RCA CTC21 chassis in the big ol' stereo console. Also one of RCA's first color sets with a rectangular picture tube.

I also have a dumb question. Does Orby work with universal ku band LNBFs? I tried it and it doesn't seem to......I'm thinking my standard (10700) LNBF took a crap as it doesn't pick up anything.

Nice tv. Is that your grandparents tv? I grew up with one of those in the 70s.
I was the remote control. Turn top dial to 2. Turn bottom dial to 28. Adjust color, turn up the volume, etc.
Just installed Orby. Using a Geosat Pro 39 incher as the dish and a regular ol' linear Ku LNBF. I was able to use my FTA receiver to find 117W. Shown on the '67 RCA console, gonna test with the D-ILA projector later. I hope it works out, I want to replace my grandparent's DirecTV with it.
