Hot water with who?... all depends on the fine print of the agreement
There are consumer protection laws regarding this kind of thing. Again, this is about the many subs that were just given ST without requesting it. That is much different than calling in and asking for it. In my experience, when I did call and was successful I was always told it would auto-renew. This was a one-off gift (for lack of a better word).

As long as let you cancel before they charge you any money...its really not an issue

2023 was what I originally thought, but have yet to see anything that confirms it.

Yep you're right it was 2022. I was remembering that some places were claiming it would expire a year earlier than it really does so I added another year - but those places were claiming after the 2021 season. The 8 year extension deal was signed in 2014, starting in 2015.

So two more seasons left, then my guess is that AT&T keeps the commercial exclusive but residential becomes like MLBEI et al and available to any cable/satellite provider that wants to pay for it on a per customer basis. What they will do as far as streaming (i.e. run it themselves like MLB, or sell a streaming exclusive to someone) is anyone's guess.

But, but but ... I didn't want to be right ...

I thought in your article it mentioned 2023 for something.

Well an article might mention 2023 as the first season where you might be able watch NFLST content without a Directv subscription.
