WMYD (RF31, virtual 20) switched over to ATSC 3.0 around 10AM today. Rescan may be required if your TV shows no signal for virtual channels 20.1, 20.2 and 20.3. Those ATSC 1.0 channels have been moved to WXYZ, WDIV and WJBK respectively to accommodate the use of WMYD as an ATSC 3.0 ”lighthouse“ station.

I saw this over the weekend and the only possibility of changing over would be that RF 31 has the strongest signal now in the Detroit market. This would only apply if you are having troubles receiving the the market over the air

I suspect in a few years there will be better, cheaper OTA DVRs out. Good for ATSC 1 and ATSC 3.

Anything on ATSC 3 not on ATSC 1 that would entice?

IOW, no rush.

Not confirmed yet but WNWO in Toledo is rumored as becoming a host Transmitter as well. I usually don’t like to post info like this since it is only 50 percent confirmed

Makes sense. It is the strongest and newest transmitter in the Toledo DMA.

The Detroit Market is now advertising the new technology and what TV’s to purchase Sony, LG and Samsung. It states the technology is upgradable at any time

Here are the markets

The advertisements for Nexgen TV (ATSC 3.0) boast about all the picture and sound improvements that are possible. However, don’t expect these improvements to occur for several years.
Since the broadcasters need to maintain their existing ATSC 1.0 broadcast for 5 years, broadcasters in each market are sharing the new ATSC 3.0 broadcasts on one guest frequency that is called a lighthouse. They then can host their ATSC 1.0 and subchannels on the existing frequencies. Because of this do not expect UHD 4K broadcasts to occur until the 5 years is up and they can then drop the ATSC 1.0 broadcasts and return to their existing frequency.
Silicondust sells a device that has 2 of the new ATSC 3.0 tuners. If you go to the Silicondust ATSC 3.0 forum you will find that most markets are having significant problems with the new ATSC 3.0 broadcasts. Like all new technology there is a steep learning curve.

Don’t you just love pioneers? The ones with the arrows in their backs?

I’ll gladly wait a few years, at least until I see a DVR as good as the DRV Pal or my Channel Masters. At a good price. Say, $100-200 for a dual tuner.

Just going into brave new world, but nowhere near Star Trek technology level.

But man we are getting here and there in this crazy time we are living in now.

Stay positive on new digital TV modulation ATSC 3.0!:)

I don't know if you remember on history book on early experiment on FM radios in late 1930's on VHF-low band 42 to 50 MHz, in WBFM mode at that time. :hatsoff

Just the same thing we are going through now.:)

Do you really think there is ANY reason ATSC 3 is coming into being, other than to move money from our wallets into theirs?

Better bandwidth with new codecs better picture quality and hopefully for 4K or 8K, and of course cost money as long we don't go crazy on silly marketing schemes.

Do you doubt that stations will use the bandwidth for anyuthing other than cramming more channels into the same spectrum so that they can make more money? 8K! I seriously doubt that.

I don't. :( Do you think they'll even broadcast any channels in 4K, regardless of the capability??

Is there much of anything that comes into being without making money being the goal? That could describe basically every TV network and service in the US aside from PBS. And RabbitEars, I suppose. ;)

Keep in mind that with ATSC 3.0 stations can also offer over the air PPV. There can also be encrypted TV channels as well

So can ATSC 1.0. See USDTV, for example.
