I recently was able to transfer from H3 to EHD. For some reason I was thinking copy to EHD. I didn't realize that it removed from the H3, but I can understand the reason. I guess the only advantage to the process is if the H3 goes down, EHD can transfer back to the replacement. If H3 goes down with your saved movies on it, then your SOL. Space isn't a problem for me on the H3, so I probably wouldn't have done any transferring at all. Am I missing anything else?

You can actually play those movies directly from the EHD so transferring back isn’t really necessary. The only time it is important for a saved program to be on the H3 is if you want to watch it from DishAnywhere.

I will now channel my inner navychop... Make your EHD a hardware raid and you won't lose the programs even if you do lose the disk.

Thanks, wish it worked from the Joey.

How can a single EHD be configured into a hardware raid?
It appears to the Hopper as a single disk, but it has more than one disk inside.

A hardware raid is like an EHD with raid built in. I have one configured with 2 3TB disks as raid0 (mirrored). I just don't have it on my H3. But navychop does have such a device on his H2's. So I am hoping he comes in and explains how that is done.

A hardware RAID is a box that contains 2 identical drives. The receiver only sees it as a single drive because they are identical mirrors of each other and the output of the box only shows itself as a single drive. If one drive fails, you still have the other with all the data on it. You replace the dead drive with another IDENTICAL drive and the hardware RAID mirrors the drives automatically.

All right, Jim. You said "identical" twice, which makes me wonder what you are saying. My mirrored raid enclosure has 2X 3TB disks by different manufacturers. My raid enclosures at work have suffered numerous failures. I replace them with drives I have equal to or larger in size, and it rebuilds and continues. If the drive is larger than the one it replaced, I am wasting some space. But it is what it is.

All the particulars of "transfer to" and the limit of how many times a recording can be transferred back to a DVR have been already dictated to Dish from the content and or copyright holders. Those who own the content have NEVER liked any "copies" of their content held anywhere--unless specific agreements have been reached, which is rare.

Also, the "transfer to" allows for releasing more space on the HDD for more recordings. It is an nice alternative instead of Dish having to provide for even larger HDD's for all our recording, and a nice way to SAVE all those recordings before the HDD fails or replace the DVR.

As far as the MVPD's (cable and satellite services--well, even the streaming services), they don't really care what you do with the recordings; they just care about the monthly bill being paid. ALL restrictions are imposed by "Hollywood" who care to every last detail what you may and may NOT do with their content to which you have a temporary license, in Hollywood's view, anyway.

Wait, there's a limit on the total number of times a recording can be transferred? That must really suck if you happen to have a bunch of DVR's and/or EHD's fail, or if you just have to upgrade to the latest DVR each time a new model comes out. Even if you do the right thing and transfer them ahead of each hard drive failure (or receiver upgrade) in an effort to avoid losing them, you could still lose access to actually watch them because you hit some unknown (to the user) limit on the number of times they are allowed to be transferred. :(

Of course that's what I mean.
But you can access that EHD attached to the H3 from your Joey...

You got a link with all that alleged information?

You are welcome to do your own research and refute it as it relates to ALL MVPD's and DVR makers such as TiVo who often cut their own deals as to what the limitations will be. I'll help you out and provide you with a place to start: look up the phrase "Preliminary Injunction." We look forward to your FULL, comprehensive report filled with links for us to be elucidated in proving the opposite. We await YOUR links. And NO, I try to never put links on forums because, as you evidently don't know, people can be SUED for providing such links. If your are serious about getting an answer to your satisfaction, then you WILL do the research yourself, for yourself and, if so inclined, inform us of the contrary. We won't hold our breath because there is doubt about being interested in learning anything for yourself and the hard work it takes do it, but prefer posting unnecessary flippant remarks fit only for Junior High. So, I've already pointed you in the right direction, lets see what some research time of yours can produce. And by the way, it would take a multitude of links and years of time, not one link and one minute as you suggest, but that would be too much work for some.

Huh??
Sued for posting links to refute or support an argument?? Now, I've been posting on forums since the old BBS days in the early/mid-'90s and I have never, ever heard of such a thing. Matter of fact, it's protocol TO provide sources and citations.

Dude, your entire post is an "unnecessary flippant remark." So... hypocrite much?

If people here were going to get sued for providing links, then Dish could have shut down this entire site any time they wanted, considering how often links to pages on the mydish website get posted here.

Simply an attempt to divert attention to the fact that you can say anything you want on the internet without any proof of what you are saying is true. A responsible person would provide provide facts of their data rather than simple opinion. I, personally, just disregard anything that person says until they can provide me with facts....

It's a shame that these two sentences weren't your entire post, because the rest of the unnecessary drivel ruined the message. Maybe you had a bad day.
