Olympics in 4K?

Channel 148-03 is a map down of channel 540-04. I am not sure what your Hopper3 will do when you try to record both channels since they are really the same channel.
Channel 540-05 just has the information Stay Tuned but no content yet.

I set the timer to record for the opening ceremony earlier today for channel 540-04 and it automatically set channel 148-03 timer. Both recordings are black screen. So we are watching tonite's PTAT version on NBC.

I have NEVER seen a Dish 4k HDR feed that rendered both colors and brightness correctly..

The 2018 Winter Olympics in 4K HDR were perfect on the Hopper3. The only problem was that the 4K Joey was unable to watch it.

I really believe that the current problem is that the Olympics is being broadcast in Dolby Vision. But the Hopper3 can only support HDR10. HDR10 supports a brightness of 1000 nits where Dolby Vision supports a brightness of 10000 nits. Of course my TV does not even support Dolby Vision.

My Guide shows 540-04 recording while 148-03 does not show the red recording dot. Remember 540-04 is Tennis not the Opening Ceremony. The Opening Ceremony is not available in 4K on Dish.

Seems as though the 4K opening ceremonies was only available to Comcast who owns NBC.

I watched parts of the 4K Tennis and then deleted the 9 hour recording. I am just not that interested in watching 9 hours of tennis. I did watch the US beat Russia in doubles by 12 to 10. Again the picture was sharp and clear but on the dark side. I hope Dish is able to get more than Tennis and Golf in 4K.

No YouTube TV is a streaming service that is completely separate from YouTube. YouTube is on the Hopper3 but YouTube TV is not. My son is subscribed to YouTube TV for his TV service.

So what is the DVR button for?

I watched a little bit of 4K tennis last night. I'm no real tennis fan so it was as exciting as watching paint dry - but it was very sharp and clear paint. After a few HDCP errors it worked without problems. The tennis was bright and colorful but when I left everything was dark for a little bit before it the picture came back to normal. It's as if the HDR takes some time to turn off.

Watched it on YTTV but did not record, definitely in 4K, a repeat of it is on now, says HDR, not DV, my TV ( 85” TCL 7 Series) does both formats, so if it was in Dolby Vision my TV would decode it.

So only tennis and golf in 4K on Dish? That's all I've seen so far and only in primetime and looking at guide that's all it shows every day for the next 8 days. WTF? how about gymnastics when it starts??

on YTTV, Beach Volleyball, Gymnastics, Skateboarding, Swimming was in 4K today along with Tennis.

Tomorrow listed-Skateboarding, Woman’s Volleyball, Swimming, Gymnastics, Triathlon, Skateboarding and more Tennis, so I would assume if on YTTV it should be available to Dish customers as well.

Watching Skateboarding on one channel and Tennis on the other right now, Skateboarding looks incredible in 4K/HDR.

Or maybe not, posted this in the 4K discussion forum-

I think NBC did publish a 4K schedule...

By looking at that link, looks like the main NBC feed is not available to DirecTV or Dish, from the link-The LIVE Opening Ceremony and NBC Primetime Shows will be available via localized UHD simulcasts in the following markets and distribution platforms (marked with a ★).

Dish and DirecTV are not listed.

Then this-
In addition, a re-air of each evening’s NBC Prime Time show will available nationally in UHD the following day at 2pm Eastern, 11am Pacific on Altice, AT&T/DirecTV, Comcast, Cox, Verizon Fios and YouTube TV.

Golf Channel and Olympic Channel UHD Coverage will be available nationally on AT&T/DirecTV, Comcast/Xfinity, Cox, DISH, fuboTV, Verizon Fios, and YouTube TV.

The only thing listed on The OLYMPIC CHANNEL in 4K is Tennis until next Sunday and Golf is not on until Wednesday.

By the way, I want 4K to succeed, I want it on all providers, it is the only way to get on a path to 4K Broadcasting, to have as many eyes watching, I do not know why YTTV, Fios, etc are able to have all available and Dish is not, I assume it has something to do with money, but not sure.

According to press reports Comcast has the Olympics in Dolby Vision.
With Tokyo 2020 a hop, skip and jump away, Comcast has announced plans to broadcast a "first-of-its-Kind" Olympic viewing experience in Dolby Vision HDR.
Can someone who has Comcast verify that they are receiving the Olympics in Dolby Vision.

So I wonder whether they are broadcasting the Olympics in multiple formats or whether some providers are able to convert Dolby Vision to HDR10.

I think the original press report was wrong. It appears that Comcast is doing HDR10 and not Dolby Vision. I need to question what I read on the internet.

Update 14.7.2021: Comcast has announced that "for the first time ever, the Olympics will be shown available live in 4K HDR with Dolby Atmos immersive audio, and X1 will offer customers full access.

That invalidates my hypothesis that Dish’s HDR was dark because the initial format was Dolby Vision.

These are crazy days we are living in where these giant media companies withhold a major technological innovation from national distribution. I am enjoying some of the programming, but I am not enjoying the non 4K picture quality. These companies that do this suck.
On a separate note, my LG 4K TV has different adjustments for HDR. Since there has not been any 4K in like forever I adjusted the picture for HDR on my LG 4K set for the first time. I've had the TV for 4 years. I've been watching a 4K TV for 4 years without 4K!
