H3 going bad?

Recently my H3 has had several hiccups. The picture will go dark for a second or 2, intermittently, and after rebooting, will return to normal. I also have some artifacts on the guide when scrolling.

Not sure what to make of it, but suspect I have the H3 going bad?

I just signed up for the 55 and up membership, but didn’t sign up for the dish protect plan, but as a senior plan, are service visits waived?

My original H3 does not do that. But it does do this:

These flashing artifacts look like a white version of the recording indicator. But they flash on and go away. This behavior has survived the last firmware update, too. :(

That could be what I’m seeing. Oddly, perhaps coincidentally, the artifacts have gone away after I archived every recoding (except pta).

Unplug your Hopper and wait a minute then replug it. This might clear out issues and glitches after a software update especially.

This solved our problems. Ours was acting mighty strange yesterday and I hadn’t been here in a while and didn’t know about the new software. We didn’t get it until 3am yesterday and as soon as I saw it I immediately unplugged for a few minutes. Upon starting back up no problems since. This has always worked for me (or the red button).

There is two or three ways to reboot the receiver.

Unplug and wait then re-plug it back in or a Hard reboot.
Power button reboot or Soft reboot : Either by the tools menu or by pushing the red button on the front.
Smart Card reset- if you have one in your receiver. Pull the smart card out and re insert it .

But when all else fails a Hard reboot is the best way to clear out bugs and glitches.

Our H3's have exhibited all manor of things that could be the sign of HDD dying, but they often fix themselves or require a reboot and then I find that the other H3 will experience the SAME problems, so it aint the HDD. And not it aint the cabling or equipment either because others on this forum reports the same stupid stuff and so do family who also have Dish (they experience the same or similar glitches).

IMHO, it is often the stupid commercial "drop-in's" from the local HDD that has streaky artifacts and then when I skip through those drop in's, I often come to BLACK and no Skip, Play, Pause button responds; it is STUCK--FOREVER. I have to change the channel to get out of it and then I can resume the DVR event I was watching. I do not mind the commercial PSA drop-in's; I just want it to WORK properly and not cause me to get stuck at black with no way to get out other then change the channel. GET IT RIGHT, DISH!

Also, IMHO, I have to wonder if Dish is crushing things and pushing to the limit of how much data can be crammed onto the Xpnders with their encoders. I have family members who report the same problems as mine and others on this forum have reported the same. Unfortunately, a lot of this stuff is now NORMAL on Dish.

The issue is back, and is very intermittent, and annoyingly frustrating. Along with my dish anywhere being so buggy, I’m just not sure the problem is my receiver or LNB or maybe even my internet connection. Any way it goes, I’m not sure what the best route to resolution is? I’ve been with dish through the 811 days, the 622 HDMI a connector issue days and while those were straightforward issues, these problems I have are less clean cut. Even when I got my first H3, it had a marginal HDMI connector, but it was simple to diagnose.
Maybe I should reactivate my HWS and send my H3 back?

my h3 and joeys have always blink out for 2 seconds after it has rebooted or I swapped inputs, on all my tvs infact all there receivers have done this going back to there first hdmi reciever. it hdmi handshake thing never this issue on any other device other then dish receivers

As for guide articfacts if there actual artifacts could be issue, but if like issue where "timer" skip flashes as screw up or down that just glitch i been seeing that for while..

intresting they have senior citzen plan? I wonder how much that cut off my dad bill seeing well past 55

The so called senior citizens plan (Dish 55+) does not offer discounts, it offers perks.

You get a free VOD movie each month, $0.00 in home tech visits (be sure to read the fine print), $0.00 replacement of equipment (I assume that means no shipping fees) and Dish Protect Plus free for 6 months.

How do you sign up for it? I can't find anything about it on My Dish web site.

Try this, It may be a Dish Network Website, but I'd feel better about calling the regular Dish number (1-800-333-3474) and asking there.

yah i enquirer about that to dish after i posted that, my dad already get that free one movie month and seeing he pay for dish protect package, replacements and tech visits are free anyway, so yah that was no help to his ever climbing bill

As Reciver issue, I seen my share, every now and then when get out netflix or amazon it show "scrambled" image and i have reboot, recent I turned my tv and saw everything in red and blue with no sound and have image shifted off screen. in most cases there just glitches.

Never actual saw actual artifacts in menus though if i saw that on any of h3 or joeys i would reboot them if it was still there i would replace them

So I’m still having these intermittent screen blanks. I am ready to ditch my H3 and reactivate my HWS. I have a hybrid lnb when I got my H3, and used to have DPP lnb so I’m not sure and am reaching out for some help.

With an HWS, can I simply unplug the H3 and replace it with the HWS?

Yes. Hybrid LNBF’s are retro compatible with all Hopper’s. You will need to run a check switch test since your HWS will still be expecting the DPP+Node setup, under diagnostics (Home x3 or Menu x2 depending on your remote) go to Dish (3) then test installation (5), let it run and if you get a prompt about fewer satellites then previously detected go ahead and select save twice. Once you see a Hybrid WA/EA under the Dish (3) menu you should be all set, just back out and see if you get channels.

So dish wouldn’t let me deactivate my H3 and activate my HWS. Even though my HWS is connected and receiving signal.

Maybe I should just schedule a service call and have the technician bring a new (refurbished) receiver. Just a very frustrating experience.

I didn't think they could refuse. Owned HWS? What excuse did they give you for this insolence?
The H3 had priority on the account.

I didn’t have the energy to elevate the matter. Perhaps I could have had them deactivate the H3 and then reactivate the HWS, but I just didn’t have the fight in me.

Part of my concern is the issue could be a bad HDMI connection at the H3, I’m thinking I might try a new cable in place of the existing in-wall pair and see if the problem goes away.

I fail to see why that matters when somebody wants to deactivate and reactivate a different receiver.

Understand. Both my wife and my best friend often expect me to fight when I just don't have the energy to do so.

Well, the HwS should give you a picture and let you watch the freebies even if it's no longer authorized on your account. That would absolve your cabling at least.
