Switching from Directv to Dish

New member and I have a quick question, is there any truth that the video quality of Dish is softer (1440x1080) across the board as with Direct I'm seeing 1920x1080 on pretty much every channel.

The deal they're offering seems good and their including the Hopper3.

THe Hopper 3 is the most elegant DVR in the industry and possibly the best technology in my entire house. The ability to navigate and lightning fast response times set it apart. It's just that good

Appreciate the response but can you tell me what resolution your TV is measuring on the HD channels, I'm seeing 1920x1080 across the board with Directv.

Thank you but with the Directv receiver I can change the resolution output and my Samsung QN90A will measure that video output from the Genie receiver, what I am asking has anyone measured what their TV is seeing from their Hopper receiver at full HD video output.

You can do that with a 722 and probably with the H3 as well, though I have not hunted around in the CUI to find the setting for my H3. What I did on the 722 was set it to use the resolution of the TV. Both receivers have the capability of up or down scaling depending upon the source material. I imagine a DirecTV receiver could do that too, but I have no experience with any of those.

What I'm saying is that the resolution, as reported by the TV, does not necessarily reflect the source resolution. And also, my experience with satellite channel sharpness has been quite good these days.
 
Is resolution that important? I'd think compression and bitrate would be much more important.

The pictured will almost never be pixelated, but the picture will be a little softer. It isn't a deal breaker but it'll be noticeable.

Having had both. I noticed that the picture quality with DirecTV is better. I'm not sure of the technical aspects - just what I noticed from watching.

That being said I would take Dish Network any day of the week over DirecTV. Having the same bill every month makes up for any slight difference in video quality.

Also, unrelated - but it speaks volumes - with DirecTV they were airing a commercial for discounted Showtime (I think it was $5/mo for 6 months at the time), I called to add it and after speaking with 3 CSRs and having the issue escalated, I was still unable to add the promotion. The CSR flat out told me that it didn't exist, even though the commercial aired on tv while I was sitting on the phone with them.

Dish Network is currently airing a promotion for Showtime $5/mo for 3 months. I called and the CSR immediately added it and told me that I qualified for other discounted movie channels as well. She even had the ability to setup so that Showtime would automatically end after 3 months and would be removed from my lineup. Super nice and knowledgeable.

You don't even have to call them. You can go into your account online and it will show you multiple special offers for a variety of programming, and you can enable them instantly, then notate them to turn off at the end of the special period.

When I had the Hopper 3, 4K broadcasts looked great. Non-4K broadcasts were often blurry, especially sporting events. Never experienced that with DirecTV. I stand by what I said: Dish picture quality is not as good even with the Hopper 3.
 
I've had both and never found any significant difference in PQ. I'm currently spending a lot of time at my in-laws due to their health and they have DTV and the PQ is good. I've got 3 different homes with installs of Dish and the PQ is good. I doubt you'd be able to tell the difference in PQ if it was A/B'ed in front of you. I never have blur or any nonsense like that on my Dish accounts and I've got some nice TV's including OLED's and QLED's all with outstanding PQ.

When I had both services in the early 2000s because HD was coming online and Directv had more HD at the time then DISH did. I liked using the DISH receivers better than the model I got from Directv. The Directv picture looked sharper like bolder on HD but you could see more noise in the picture in the back grounds and dark settings. The SD channels were abysmal. The worst quality of any channels I've seen between the two services. I had to adjust my picture controls different for the output for Directv and DISH to get the best picture I could for both . Once DISH got as much HD or comparable HD channels I dropped Directv, because the price would of been going up and I was barely using the receiver any more except for one HD channel.

I've had both over the years and just didn't notice any difference between them far as pic quality. But, to me it is about DVR quality and DTV cannot even come close to the H3. last time I was with DTV was a few years ago and I had a 54. Came back to DISH because of the H3 and haven't regretted a minute.

SD quality on both is abysmal but how often are we watching SD programming these days? Not much IMHO. If I was to chose the better of those two I'd pick DTV as being less bad than Dish on SD. You can definitely see "blur" on SD content on both services with Dish being worse. Maybe those who saw blur are talking about SD content? I wouldn't use SD content as the metric for judging overall PQ of each service though.
 
DirecTV is losing its big sports draw. For the 2023 NFL season the NFL is moving Sunday Ticket to a streaming service.
