I read something recently about Viacom Corp. putting up the CW network for sale and the leading bidder is Nexstar Media Group. If this happens, and you live in a market that the CW is on one station and Nexstar owns a whole other station what will happen. Scripps owns KATC 3 in Lafayette La and the cw is on 3.2 while Nexstar owns KLFY 10 CBS/DABL/ION/LAFF. Supposingly all this started Jan 6, 2022.

The reason the network is for sale is that Paramount has realized it can make more $$ keeping all its comic book material for itself and thus Paramount Plus.

Without the DC material, what is CW? It only programs two hours, six days a week. Most of the programming is aimed at niche audiences and it is usually last in the time slot, ever time slot, every day.

That would be Warners Bros/Discovery. They own the DC material. It would go to HBOmax or whatever future streaming service is kept out of the Warners Discovery merger.

Totally wrong, as OSU said, Warner owns DC, but that is not why they are about to be sold.

The deal with Netflix is coming to a end, that was the main thing that made the CW profitable, hence why they canceled a bunch of shows, the majority of them aired on Netflix after the season, one of them, The Flash, has a shortened last season coming up next year, the only other things from DC on the CW next year will be Superman and Gotham Knights ( new show).

Also, while true that Warner wants to put new DC content on HBO, all of the things in development has been canceled, when Discovery CEO David Zaslav took over, he has said he is looking for someone like Kevin Feige, who runs Marvel so well, to do the same for DC.

The current station would be allowed to carry it until their affiliation deal ends. Then it could be moved. If moved it would likely be subordinate to CBS but who knows.

RIP CW

The CW will add more cost-effective unscripted programming and “high-quality syndicated programming” to its lineup, which he indicated is “a departure from the prior predominant focus on expensive, original scripted content, which is uncommon among major broadcast networks.”

As for the fates of current CW originals like All American and Superman & Lois, no updates were given on their futures. Carter confirmed, though, that The CW’s current co-owners — Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global, both of which will retain a 12.5 percent minority stake in the network — will continue to produce original scripted content, primarily for the 2022-23 broadcast season. Beyond that, Nexstar will extend its creative partnership with the two companies “if mutually agreeable.”

CW is going to be just a home for faux reality “unscripted” crap and reruns.

There really is nothing on it now I watch besides Penn & Teller, who are nearing the end of their run (Teller is ill).

The analysts are right, the CW strategy of aiming at young people was not logical.

Here, KOIN-CBS-Portland also have KRCW-CW. Their line up: KOIN 6.1, 6.2 Get TV, 6.3 Sports Grid; KRCW 32.1 CW, 32.2 Antenna TV, 32.3 Court TV, 32.4 TBD.

I think WLUK-TV 11 (Fox) is going to have a hard time letting Nexstar-owned WFRV-TV 5 (CBS) take over WCWF 14 (The CW) in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Sinclair won't give up that CW affiliate without a fight...not after all the investments they put into the station after Sinclair bought LIN Media...

Why would Sinclair just give up a station? Simple answer...THEY WON'T
(that ranks up there where people at another site on the same subject thinks that a Nexstar CBS would drop it for CW):rolleyes:

Once the contract comes due all Nexstar has to do (if they desire) is say "we're not going to negotiate a contract for the 2 hour CW programming with you anymore" and take it in house on a subchannel. Its the same thing that happened in a couple "secondary" NBC affiliates WMGM (Atlantic City, NJ) and WHAG (Hagerstown, MD). Both were in the same DMA and in the shadow of NBC O&O's (WCAU in Philly and WRC in Washington DC) so when the contract came due NBC/Comcast didnt even offer a contract to them.

Its just like when WACY in Green Bay dropped My Network. Pretty much the same thing.

I could see WCWF 14 affiliating with This TV or "MOVIES!" if The CW goes to a subchannel of WFRV-TV.

Maybe that WFRV subchannel could rebroadcast the newscasts of their semi-satellite/sister station WJMN-TV 3 of Marquette, Michigan if WJMN-TV becomes a charter affiliate of the now-Nexstar-owned The CW, with MyNetworkTV/Antenna TV in the Marquette, Michigan market moving to WBUP-TV 10.2 and WBKP-TV 5.1. If the rebroadcast of WJMN in Green Bay does happen, Green Bay's WFRV-TV 5 will have to insert some of its own syndicated network programming in timeslots that would not conflict with other networks (Rachael Ray airs on WLUK-TV 11 in Green Bay, so another syndicated TV show will have to take its place during a certain time as it airs on WJMN-TV 3.)

Why wouldn't they just add 2 hours of syndicated programming instead? Its not like they'd lose CBS or NBC programming with 6 or 7 hours a day of network programming.

Again we are dealing with 2 hours of programming a day. WJMN went with My Network and AntennaTV mix along with syndicated shows when they lost CBS. So lets say they get the CW programming from Marks group, again you're dealing with 2 hours of programming. WJMN can keep their AntennaTV fill in programming along with their syndicated shows.
The difference in Marquette versus Green Bay is Marquette its the CW+ which is a 24/7 programmed station (with a couple of timeslots for news/local programming if desired) for small markets. Green Bay has an affiliate so they have to fill 22 hours of programming.

I'm lost here. Why would WFRV simulcast from WJMN? WFRV would make the CW a subchannel. Again nobody is going to drop their Big 4 affiliation for CW.

People are dropping cable subscriptions, streaming services are raising prices and people are buying antennas at record levels. Hmm, what should we do? I know let's get the cheapest crap possible to put on our OTA network! I mean it worked so well with MY Network and ION.

I came up with a better idea for a more realistic scenario:
* WCWF 14 switches to MyNetworkTV, airing progams from a secondary This TV or getTV affiliate during the times MyNetworkTV syndicated programming isn't airing, which is most of the day.
* In response to the aforementioned switch, WFRV-TV 5 adds a new 24-hour CW+ subchannel...

WACY-TV 32 disaffiliated with MyNetworkTV to become an independent station just a few weeks ago.

do like the Pensacola/Mobile affiliate. 35 mntv is on for 2 hours and ThisTV is on the other 22...which i believe you mentioned with WCWF....

i got this clearstream 4 bagger antenna that i can catch whatever no matter what direction i turn it. Only bad thing is all the markets around me have the exact same networks...CW, DABL, FOX, NBC, ION, GRIT. Not complaining just saying...

Scripps always has bright ideas. That does'nt surprise me they dropped MNTV from WACY and go back to Independent......
