2022-23 MLB Hot Stove Discussion

From the Chicago Tribune, more than2 billion was spent at the winter meetings this year.

The Mets Steve Cohen payroll is now $349 million, and the luxury tax will be another $70 million on top of that!

Further indictment on what Bloom has done to the Red Sox.

And ya doubt that Devers would sign, seeing they got rid of everyone else he came up with.

As a Fan IF Devers did sign, you'd say Why now, you've already destroyed the talented team you had.

I think the mandate came down from ownership to trim payroll. They went all in in 2018 when Dombrowski was the GM and won a World Series. Dombrowski was fired shortly thereafter and they brought Bloom in (who happens to have a more “thrifty” mindset). So you could argue (I’m not BTW, because I want Bloom gone yesterday) that Bloom had no choice than to trade away all the high end talent (or in X’s case let walk). That said, the return for these guys is a fireable offense. Verdugo is a very nice player that would be a good complementary piece on a World Series contender- but that’s his ceiling. Other than that it’s been a who’s who of AAA to AAAA tweeners. The Sox need to get his smarmy “I’m the smartest guy in the room” behind out of here!!

BTW, I would be SHOCKED if they don’t get a deal for Devers sewn up. I think Henry, Warner and Kennedy now see that the fans will burn Fenway to the ground if they let Devers walk away. IMO, Bogaerts departure will ultimately give Devers a blank check.

I think I would put Bloom as public enemy #1, but it’s otherwise a solid (or not very) list.

Good point, but at the end of the day money does talk. I honestly don’t know how Devers feels, but I do know that Bogaerts wanted to stay here very much. Ownership/management had other ideas.

I'm sure they looked at what Xander Did get, and feel happy they let him go.

I don 't see the Red Sox contending again till those Tampa type people are gone .... could be awhile as they are saving lots of money.

I hope thier other endevors are winning titles in ... what is it Soccer, hope that is making more than the baseball team is.

And the Pittsburgh Penguins

Astros had better wake up, they have lost out on 3 Catchers they were interested in ...
Maldanodo (36) can only catch so much ... they have one in the minors that came up last year for a bit, but they still went out and signed another, so he either Not ready or ... not ready .

To be fair, Vazquez isn’t a backup. Yes, the Astros brought him in at the trade deadline for pennant race insurance, but it is time for Vazquez to once again get a #1 catcher spot somewhere.

I agree .... Vazquez signed with the Twins ... or will today if he hasn't already.

I can understand why its hard for the Astros to sign a Catcher, seeing its going to be a split season, till Maldanado hangs them up.
Vazquez moving on doesn't surprise me at all.
Thats also why they didn't Really have a chance with Sean Murphy.

The Giants and Carlos Correa agree to a 13 year/$350 Million contract. Good Lawd!!

WOW ....
13 years ....
I would take a guess and say this is highly front loaded and more like an 8 or 9 years.
Any Out Clauses for him this time ?
With the Twins he had an out Every year.

edit: says No Opt out clauses .... Wow again.

These contracts are going from the ridiculous to the sublime! The NL West with the 3 California teams are becoming all super powers.
