2022-23 MLB Hot Stove Discussion

I said when Bogaerts left it would be an open checkbook for Devers. Looks like I was right. I love Devers, but this is the contract Mookie Betts should have got a couple of years ago.

You are right .... Mookie should have been the first , then Xavier and now Devers ....
Sadly the Red Sox decided to become a SMALL Market team and screw all the fans.

Bill, IF you could have signed 2 of the Big 3 we mentioned, who would have been your choices ?

I would have gone with Betts and Bogaerts first ...
I also think players will decide they don't want to play in Boston if the Not signing players continues.

Devers signing didn't IMPROVE the Sox at all .... he was with them last year, they still need to go out and get a TOP player(s), which there are not many left.

Looks like another long season.

Betts, Devers and then Bogaerts. But sadly I agree, there is no excuse for a supposedly “big market” team letting ANY home grown superstar get away. And yes, Devers contract is mind numbing, but it was definitely more reactionary than being proactive. And for me that matters. John Henry FINALLY accurately read the temperature in the room, but too little too late to be trusted again.

Your right, there is NO EXCUSE for them not getting the Big Time players ... when they lost Xander, they him hawed around and now have very little to choose from as far as a Top on the Line SS ....
Thier fallback is moving Story over, hope that doesn't happen ....
IF Correa contract with the Mets doesn't get signed, they should go for him.
This report that he's not healthy from 2014, is BS, it didn't seem to stop him playing for the Astros for all those years.
Sox could give him high Avg money wise with shorter time frame than what hes been looking for ... he wants 8-10 years that others had gotten, because others got it.
I say offer him a deal for 4 maybe 5 years and go from there.

He does have occasional injury issues, but he's Gold in the Post season, very Clutch ...

IF, and thats a BIG IF, that would happen, the Sox Still need MORE .... Pitching comes to mind. and others.

Without a STUD in the lineup, the Sox are looking at a potential Last place finish again.

Wallich,
I don't see the 4th quarter as a collape by OSU, I see it as you lost your best player as a Major reason .

Had Marvin Harrison still been playing in the 4th quarter, they would have been able to sustain drives, like they did thru the 1st half and 3rd.
With them sustaining drives, Georgia wouldn't have regained the momentum at least as much as they had.
With the O sustaining drives, the Defense would not have been on the field nearly as much so Georgia would have Less chances to catch up because they didn't have the ball enough times to possibly catch up.

Harrison going out was a MAJOR thing in this game.
He is the best recvr out there and was winning battles against Georgia all day long.

Had this been Last years WR's, no problem, they had more Top depth at WR ...
This year they don't have as much behind Harrison and EE.

Last year they have Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson (both had very good years in the NFL this year) and Harrison and EE were the back ups .... on a positive, both of these WR's come back next year.

After next year, Harrison will be the STUD coming into the NFL and do very well.

This is a good move, hes a Great guy in the clubhouse and just 2 years ago was a Batting champ, hes also a Stud defensively.
Last year was a down year for him.
Astros thought about resigning, but at that point he would only be a back up at 1B with Abreau being signed.

At least the Sox won't have to worry about not having a 1B next year, and they have thier 1B prospect coming up more than likely, good insurance for the Sox (Gurriel).

They already let Eric Hosmer go, and they just signed Justin Turner. With this move, I expect them to try and find a trade partner for Bobby Dalbec. And unless he has a terrible Spring, I don’t see them breaking camp without Triston Casas. Wouldn’t surprise me if the Sox are looking at a Gurriel/Turner/Casas rotation between 1B and DH. And when they want to give Devers a little rest, they can put him at DH and Turner at 3B. Regardless, they STILL need to address the pitching or they’re looking at another 4th or 5th place finish.

I Agree ...

Pitching ?
Who's left thats worthwhile for them ?

Personally I think its BS with the teams trying to get a better deal with him ...
Why ?
They are talking about an injury that happened before he even got to the MLB back in 2014 .....
He seemed to play pretty damn good from 2014 thru 2020(?) for the Astros without any issues.
Yes, he was injured some with the Astros, but none of it was ankle/leg related.

I also would Never go 10 or more years with ANY athlete .... I would go 5 years MAX with anyone ... Players change So much in 5 years, pay the player more on the per year if they don't like the 5 year plan.

Mets owner Really wants Correa, he'll get it done soon ... This may be a Agent trying to get more for the player again.
I believe he now has Boris for an Agent.

Don't the Red Sox have an up and coming SS in the high minors they were ready to bring up ?
Did they REALLY let Xander go with NO solid OPTIONS behind him ????

Hey Bill,
If Yuli signed with the Red Sox ...
Why are the Astros thinking about signing him for insurance purposes ???

What happened with the Sox ?

Marcelo Mayer is a SS and is the Red Sox top prospect. However, they don’t expect him to be realistically ready until 2024 at the earliest. As far as what Chaim Bloom did to fix the current SS problem……he applied a big, fat Band-aid. He just signed outfielder Adam Duvall this week. The plan is to now move CF Kiki Hernandez to SS and put Duvall in CF. I think a better move with Story out indefinitely, is to bring Jose Iglesias back for a 4th time to be the everyday SS, move Kiki Hernandez to 2B (where he’s very good defensively), and keep Christian Arroyo as the utility infielder ( I like Arroyo a lot, but he just can’t be depended on to stay on the field). No matter what, this team is currently a BIG mess!!!

I agree, I want Iglesias at SS Or 2B .... much better defender. No bat, but at least he can defend.

Unfortunately, Chaim came on board to NOT WIN , but to only save Money ....
