4K Events Discussion Thread

Compared the USC Utah 4K HDR broadcast on 540-02 with the 1080i broadcast on Fox channel 28 and the colors are brighter and much more vivid on the 1080i broadcast.

I’m using the “Start Over Watch from the beginning“ trick to watch the FIFA World Cup on channel 540-02 4K HDR on my Joey 4K. Normally I have been watching the World Cup games on my AppleTV with the FoxSports App, but the Final is on Fox (I don’t sub to Locals on my Dish Flex Pack) and no way I’m watching 720p when I can watch in 4K HDR!

I’m wondering how many of the NCAA Football Bowl games will be in 4K HDR? I’m expecting the Championship games, but what other Bowl games will Dish be able to broadcast to us in 4K HDR?

Most bowl games are on ESPN so we won't see any of them in 4K. The Holiday Bowl is on Fox so expect that one, it was 4K last year I believe. Championship games, all 3 of them will be ESPN so no go there.

The Championship game will be in 4K, just not on Dish, it will be on DirecTV, YTTV, etc-

An ESPN spokesperson tells the TV Answer Man that the January 9th championship game will be broadcast in 4K.

ESPN source says the 4K broadcast this year could be the same production and camera angles as the regular ESPN broadcast.

That is correct. I actually knew that but because this thread is a sub of the Dishnetwork threads I excluded it. It would be wonderful if Dish could pickup on all of these ESPN 4K games that other providers get.

540-02 had the Olympics in 4K HDR which was an NBC/Universal/Comcast agreement, so maybe there's hope?

Probably not, though. Too bad ESPN doesn't do like the FoxSports app does on streaming platforms and offer the 4K stream through its App on all the different platforms. It appears to be an exclusive to the PayTV Provides like DirecTV.

I don’t think my dish box does 4K, but my Xbox does. I tried watching some World Cup games in 4K on it with YouTubeTV but it didn’t look any different than Fox on Dish. I found some 4K stuff on Amazon video that looked way better than usual, so I guess not all 4K is created equal.

I noticed this morning that DISH has added channel 540-03 to the guide. It shows 4K and also HD (in green). I checked my 4K Joey and that channel is now in its guide. There are no upcoming events on that channel, or the other two either, so we will have to see what is going to happen. It might just be a way to bring you an HD signal on a 4K HDR event or maybe they will actually give you 4K without the HDR on the 4K Joey.

The Fox stuff is up-converted 1080P, not real 4K.

Happy to see the FOX playoff games will be in 4K again after they did not have any 4K broadcasts during the regular season (since they lost Thursday Night Football to Amazon). Excited to have the Super Bowl on FOX again so we can get the (upscaled) 4K HDR coverage for the big game! Hope there will soon be a time that every Super Bowl/playoff game will be required to be in 4K but no movement from CBS in that area so it may be just a dream for a long time

IIRC, CBS was the last of the big 3 networks to move to color many years ago, maybe 4K will be the same?
CBS does do 4K ( not NFL), it is on the Paramount+ app.

i expect they will have sports in 4K soon enough on P+, by the way their NFL games look great in 1080P, just as good as Fox’s fake 4K.

I have the game recording on the Hopper 3 downstairs and I’m watching it on my 4K Joey. My LG OLED indicates HDR on the signal so the “Join from the Beginning” work-around still works.

I did a test on this last night. There was a 4K HDR football game on channel 540-01. I looked at channel 540-03 on my 4K Joey and it showed off-air. I tried it anyway and it didn't play anything. So, the speculation that they might have a way to remove HDR and show it on 540-03 hasn't panned out at this point.

I saw that I forgot to set up the timer on 540-01 for the Cowboys - 49ers game, but I was able to use the DishAnywhere App on my iPad to record the event. Same as before, on my Joey 4K, red button to bring up the TV Activity, select the recording of the game, and use the Start from Beginning instead of Join.

Since the Joey 4K can clearly do 4K HDR (2160p, HDR, BT.2020, Dolby Audio according to my LG), why we can’t have access to Channel 540-01 directly is a puzzlement.

I have an AV receiver that can pass through 4K, but not 4KHDR, so I am not able to watch 4KHDR by running my Dish through my AV receiver. Is there a way for me to run the dish receiver straight to my TV and still get surround sound via ARC with my AV receiver and TV? I would rather not have to upgrade my AV receiver if I do not have too.

So I may have been a dummy this whole time. I think I solved my problem. After I posted this I started playing around with the HDMI inputs, and routed the HDMI cable from the Dish receiver straight to the HDMI 2 port of my Sony A80K TV instead of going through my AV Receiver. The HDMI cable from my TV's ARC HDMI port was already going to my AV Receiver for surround sound. It worked. I no longer get the error message when I tune to Channel 540 and I was able to watch the Super Bowl from the last time it was on Fox that I had recorded and did not receive the error message that I had been receiving. Hope that may help any other lost souls trying to solve this issue they may have.
