Tigers Hot Stove Discussion

Okay, I'll bite. What would be so horrible about having a perennial All-Star around?

Perenial All Star ???
Just because he's voted in on the popularity contest doesn't make him an All Atar, in my book.

He wants to play 2nd base, he stinks as a fielder, thats why the Yankees let him go. He doesn't want to play in the outfield, and pouts about it, even refuse to go out to the field before his 1st assigned game in the outfield.

Just because he can hit, doesn't make him an all star, he would not come close to an all star game if I were voting.

His attitude Suxs too.

I have not need for him and hopefully the Tigers won't either.

Easy, Jimbo. I just asked a frickin' question. You hate for the man -- I get it. That's fine -- go ahead and vote for someone else on your all star ballot.

But um... yeah. Perennial All-Star. As in the last five years. And Rookie of the Year in the only year he wasn't an All-Star.

2001: .268, 18, 73 ---- ROY
2002: .300, 39, 102 --- All Star
2003: .290, 38, 91 -----All Star
2004: .280, 28, 91 -----All Star, MVP
2005: .268, 36, 104 ----All Star
2006: .277, 46, 95 -----All Star

Hardly seems fair to suggest he's an all star due simply to "popularity". I'd say he's put up some impressive offensive numbers throughout his career. I know the Tigers are good, but I gotta believe they could find a spot in the lineup to plug in those numbers -- even if it means sacrificing defense. I don't see how he's any more likely to be a clubhouse cancer than Sheffield, but I obviously don't know them as well as you do.

I don't hate anyone ...
I just don't think you should be considered this Superstar when all you can do is hit.
btw, he hit only .231 with runners in scoring position this year.

He would make a perfect DH
For some reason I cannot find a website that does Defensive stats
this man cannot spell Defense.
The only reason he's considered a "Superstar" is because everyone that plays for the Yankees is tagged with that label, for life.

I see he didn't go anywhere at the trading deadline, when Washinton desperatly wanted to trade him.
He got traded from NY because we could not play 2nd base.

keep in mind, this is just MY opinion.

Jimbo, I'm TIMM on this one. You cant ignore his numbers. As for being a cancer, I dont remember hearing about any problems past the first week of the season. But this all moot because he doesn't fit into the projected payroll of 90M. So dont look for Soriano in a Tigers uniform this spring.

Shefield is more of a cancer (malcontent player) than Soriano. Good luck with Shefield... 38 years old with bad temper and had problems in LA, Atlanta, NY... his reputation is quite a history--- more than Soriano.

Except, sheff is good defensively, (Not at 1st) although he will probably be a DH for the majority of the year.
As for being a Cancer, he was not a cancer in Flordia and Leyland and Dombrowski have a great relationship with him, I don't expect him to be a mal content like he has been with other teams.

IF Soriano could play BETTER than any of the curent Tigers in the field it would be different, but in the field I would take our current defense over him.

btw, If Shef is going to DH, then I would imagine that Thames would, probably be gone as well as Casey (we already expected him to be gone as much as I liked him, I've liked him since he came to the Reds quite awhile ago.).

Did you see sheff play in the outfield for the last two years? He is a liability. Better at DH.... Speaking of Florida... you are talking about 1997.... years away from LA, Atlanta & NY.... Don't fool your self ... Sheff is a cancer whether you like it or not.... I can't wait to see when Leyland tells him that he is a DH and not an outfielder.... Cancer Alert....

Soriano maybe not the most brilliant player defensively but certainly can make up for his defense with his bat.... Your current outfielders (except Ordonez) are not the same category as Soriano...

Defensivly ??? You kidding right ???
I would take Craig Monroe over Soriano ANYDAY. Craig's got an above average arm too,
Granderson is an up and coming player in CF, he was a rookie this year, covers the HUGE Centerfield in Comerica better than anyone to this day.

Soriano would never dive for a ball... period

As for Sheff, we'll just have to wait and see, I am not thrilled with the move, but seeing it took no one off the everyday roster and his previous history with LEYLAND and DOMBROWSKI is very positive, I'll take my chances.
Leyland will put him in his place, if nessasary, just like he did with several others this year.
Leyland will not allow the distractions that he may have cause in other cities.
If the Tigers had ANY other manager, I would agree with you all.

Jimbo

Okay, first things first: Yay for Verlander.

As for Sheffield's history with Leyland and Dombrowski being "very positive".... well, there was this:

Ten years ago, when both were with the Marlins, Sheffield told reporters that Dombrowski was a liar, after learning he might be traded.
http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2006611120439

Just sayin'. It's not all positive.
I don't know the guy. I'll be rooting for him. But trouble sure seems to have a way of following him. I'm just saying that if Soriano were an option I'd take him. Frankly I think he and Sheffield are very similar in what they do and what kind of jackasses they are -- but that Soriano's younger and in my opinion better. That being said, Sheffield's a Tiger and Soriano isn't. That puts me squarely on Team Sheffield. I'm glad he's on the team, and am even okay with giving up Sanchez and the boys to get him. I expect 35 homers and over a hundred RBI. But I also expect that before he's done here he'll be a distraction.

The only reason I came in to defend Soriano is because Jimbo said something about signing him would ruin everything, which seems ridiculous. Signing Soriano, in my opinion, would be no more likely to "ruin everything" than signing Sheffield. I think Sheffield improves the Tigers. As would Soriano.

I think you are misunderstanding what I said. I said that Soriano is not as great as defensively but can make up for it with his bat. Monroe/Anderson are not in the same category as Soriano when it comes to hit. Get my meaning.

As I said good luck with Sheff... There was something we learned with Sheff in the two years he was in NY. It does not take him too long to start complaining... Good luck again.

I think Casey may be the fallback position. We need an upgrade at first, but at what cost? Pitching is still more important than hitting in my book, and giving up Bonderman is too high of a cost to upgrade 1st base. I would be happy with Casey back. It looks like Shelton may actually be the odd man out.

Casey signs for 1 year

So I guess they aren't interested in Casey.

I thought I heard that Casey was a Free Agent (nothing free about it) and was looking to move on, or something like that.

I would love to get Texiera, but would not give up on Bonderman to get him, theres got to be other ways.

Only a madman will give up quality pitching for Texiera. Wasn't his number in decline from last year?

He hit .282, 33 HRs, 110 Rbi, OBP .371, Slg .514 and a solid fielder, a two time Gold Glover

Still don't give up quality pitching, at least that much, Bonderman could be here a long time.

I doubt that Dombrowski's gonna make that trade. But, if he does I'll just go ahead and give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he knows something I don't. I'd love to have Texeira, and would be willing to give up quality pitching to get him, but personally I think Bonderman is a keeper.
