Is the 522 really the same as a 625??

As long as I'm sticking my neck out and showing how little I know, let me ask this one as well.

When my 510 died (boohoo) and Dish sent me a "refurbished" 510 that lasted all of 8 hours, they told me they would upgrade me to a new 625 receiver. When the tech came with it, I noticed it was a 522 and questioned him about it. He told me it was exactly the same as a 625, just a different number. Dish Network also agreed with him. Am I being taken, or do they really have 2 model numbers for the same unit????

Thank you to all who answer!

their is a difference that being the hdd hard disk drive storage the 625 has 250 gb the 522 has 120 gb gb=gigabytes
other than that they are exactly the same so the 625 can record and storage more than the 522
:welcome to SATGUYS :welcome

The brochure for the 625 says it can record 100 hours and I'm positive the 522 was rated for the same. I know the 625 has a larger HDD, but the add'l space is reserved for "video on demand", isn't it ?? Does the 522 not have the "VOD" option ??

No the 625 has VOD. If you don't use VOD, it doesn't matter if you get the 522 or the 625. Recording time is the same. The VOD space on the 625 can't be accessed for other programming.

522 does not have VOD and they now have different SW numbers than the 625. I have both and the 625 is rock solid while the 522 has been shakey.

Wow, that was quick! Is it enough that I sould complain to Dish about it? We record all the time.....
I would the kids are a handful and you really dont have time togo to videostore and since the kids are so difficult you think youre family would really benefit from the features of vod video on demand although its mainly old movies download over phoneline when 625 not in use.

stone, forgot your vitamin today? :)

the vod comes from the satellite not the phone line.

the 522 and 625 are identical hardware except for the hard drive size. None of the additional space on the 625 is available to the user, they have the exact same amount of user record space.

i guess although i don't take vitamin's:) they have the same amount of record space until it comes to vod as 625 can store maovies for a few days as 522 cant

as for vod functioning over sat thats news to me mine only seemed to download vod when phoneline was plugged in and 625 was not in use for a few days, although it has been awhile since i used my 625 and 522 turned 625:)

Come on, you realize how long it would take to download full-length movies over dial-up ?? Even with fast cable or DSL it can take 1-3 hours. On dial-up it would take 1-3 days !

Thanks you to everyone who answered!!! We usually do not do VOD, so I'll just stay with the 522 until I have problems, hopefully many years! I would like to say this forum is fantastic, I wish I found it earlier, as all of answered my questions in record time, when Dish had me calling every other day! Thanks again. Fred

my movies always took that long to download
id leave machine off for a few days come back and it would have downloaded 3 movies

522 and 625 has the same storage and the same features except the 625 has Video On Demand. If you do not care about the Video On Demand then there is no advantage of having the 625. I believe they also charge extra for the Video On Demand than regular PPV's so to me a 522 instead of a 625 would be no biggie. They did give you a heck of a lot better receiver in exchange for that 510 you had so you have nothing to really complain about (as long as they will not consider the 522 a lease receiver if you bought the 510).

Will the 625 show the HD channels (but in SD) if you subscribe to a metalic HD package? A dish CSR claimed the 625 will, and I know that my 522 doesn't.

My dad just got dish yesterday - a 625 and a 211. We had to call Dish because my step mom placed the order and mistakenly ordered AT180 instead of HDGold.
When I called, the CSR said they'd be able to see the HD channels downrez'd to SD on the 625.
I didn't check their 625 (I was too busy drooling over HDNet on their 211 with their brand new 40" Sony LCD!!), but I do know that while I get HD Bronze, the HD channels are only shown on my 622 and are not on my 522 at all.
(I also think it's strange that they were originally allowed to get a VIP211 and no HD programming)

If the 625 does show the HD's in SD while the 522 does not, that's a potentially big advantage to the 625. I'm gonna go out on a limb and think the CSR was wrong though...

The 625 (or any non-HD receiver for that matter) won't be able to view any of the HD channels, even downrezzed. The CSR that said that is full of it.

Another feature the 625 has is the USB ports are hot for the PocketDISH so that you can transfer your recordings to the PocketDISHes.

The 522 also has VOD. Mine currently has one movie and 3 1/2 hour shows. What's the extra space on the 625 really for?
