former dallas cowboys receiver michael irvin is part of the 2007 class to the nfl hall of fame that also includes former bills running back thurman thomas.

this is irvin's third attempt at entry. his previous attempts were probably denied due to alleged cocaine use.

how do you all feel about this?

you know i had a problem when L.T. made the hall. i wish all of the hall of fames would have basically the same entrance requirements. if you are going to judge someone by how they performed on the field, fine. then pete rose is long overdue for cooperstown. if you are going to judge character issues, then there are guys in canton (and elsewhere, i'm sure) who shouldn't be in!!!!

That's why football and baseball are different in ways they let someone into the hall.

Look at McGuire, never tested positive for any drug and can't get into the hall.

Irvin stabs a teammate during training camp, plus a drug conviction and gets to go to the hall.

Merriman test positive for steroids and still gets to go to the pro-bowl.

I love football more than any other sport, but it's time to clean up there problems and not praise there problems.

Yep, Mr. Irvin has certainly earned his induction into the Hall of Shame, but not into the NFL Hall of Fame. Does this individual possess the character and leadership worthy to be a Hall of Fame inductee? I think not! This scumbag shouldn't even be on the ballot. Not surprising is his affiliation with the Miami Correctional Facility. It's time for the NFL to bring a little "professionalism" back to the game.

Sex, drugs and injuries

In March of 1996, Irvin was arrested on charges of cocaine possession at a hotel party celebrating his 30th birthday. After numerous court appearances amid a national media circus, which featured Irvin showing up to court in a full-length mink coat, he pled no contest to the charges and was sentenced to community service, ordered to pay a $10,000 fine, and put on 4-years probation. When drug-tested for illicit drugs, he tested negative. But the NFL suspended Irvin for the first five games of the 1996 season.

Irvin was also known as a regular at the "White House", a private pleasure palace near the team's training facility, where he and some Dallas teammates, like lineman Nate Newton, allegedly enjoyed a variety of wanton activities, including drugs and illicit sex.

In Irvin's 1996 absence, the Cowboys struggled out of the gate and never recovered. Upon his return from suspension, Irvin tallied 962 receiving yards in only 11 games.

Irvin sustained further damage to his reputation when controversy reared its head again as the Cowboys played the Carolina Panthers for their NFC Divisional Playoff game. Media reports stated that Irvin and teammate Erik Williams had sexually assaulted a woman and, with a gun to her head, videotaped the interaction. Despite Williams' and Irvin's denials of the allegations, the story overshadowed the game, which the Cowboys lost. The accuser was later proven to have fabricated the entire incident and faced charges of perjury, but the damage had already been done.

Michael Irvin overdue? What's that make Charlie Sanders? If there ever was an overdue candidate, then Charlie's it. This man was without doubt the finest tight end of his era ( and a few others).

i may be in the minority but i would hardly say irvin is overdue.

although, this is slightlu off-topic, mcquire did admit he took some type of steroid which wasn't on major league baseballs banned list at the time. he certainly didn't win any friends basically taking the fifth at the grand jury. i would be more likely to give him consideration until proven otherwise.

Apples and Oranges. Irving was no angel when not playing football, but by the most part....he did NOT use ANY kind of performance enhancing drugs....he liked to party alot which got him in trouble....AND McGuire only admitted to Andro because he was either caught or ratted out....GOD only knows he took and didn't say...there was no drug test at the time. Back to Irvin, he has TONS better stats than Lynn Swann.....more than 300 catches and 6 thousand yards and 14 more TDs....and he was in....why SHOULDN'T he have been there earlier....?

I don't think Irvin deserved to get in any sooner and since he took drugs and all that I think he should get in at all. If you go on performance then Monk should have gotten in first. More catches, more yards. How can this be possible that someone with less can get in over them. Monk has 2 Super Bowls too or is it 3, don't remember.

So I take it any player who played at "The U" gets a pass on all crimes.

He had a DRUG CONVICTION while playing football, he stabbed a team mate with scissors because he couldn't get his hair cut first.

And the reason he has so many catches and yards is because he pushed off more than any other WR.

Aikman, Emmit and Moose Johnson plus others deserve to be in the hall, but not Irvin.

If he was such a big drug user why wasnt he banned?

Cowboys Notes: Judge details McIver incident; two players cut, etc.
By Bart Hubbuch
The Dallas Morning News
(KRT)
State District Judge Manny Alvarez, who oversees Michael Irvin's probation, said everyone who was interviewed gave consistent accounts of what occurred in the July 29 dormitory incident that left guard Everett McIver with a deep cut on his neck.
The judge gave the following version of events:
"According to everyone that they talked to, they were standing in line to get a haircut and a tussle ... something about Irvin cutting in line because he was a senior player. And other players kind of taunted this new McIver saying, 'You aren't going to let that guy who weighs 100 pounds less than you get in front of you.' And a wrestling match ensued. Irvin had a pair of scissors in his hand to do the, you know, the haircut ... when they were rolling around all of a sudden McIver was bloodied. They stopped."
Judge Alvarez said McIver was not stabbed"
