L4.01 For ViP622 Is Coming!

From what I am hearing from Beta testers the new software works really well and is really solid.

There is only one feature I hope is present in this upgrade, and thats the ability for the receiver to automatically change output resolutions based on content. I'm sick and tired of constantly having to switch between 1080i and 480p depending on what I'm watching.

What are you talking about here? Why are you having to change between the two? You shouldn't have to do this.

If the scaler in the TV is better than the scaler in the 622 then it would make sense to do the scaling in the TV.

I know I switch between 1080i and 720p depending on which channel I'm watching. For 720p content on a 1080p display it is better to send 720p and have the TV scaler scale to 1080p then it is to send 1080i.

Here's the 720p path for 1080i output to a 1080p display:
1) 720p cut to 30 frames per second (from 60)
2) Image interlaced to 60i (for 1080i60)
3) Image scaled to 1080i from 720i
4) Transfer at 1080i
5) Deinterlace at display

For 720p output to a 1080p display on 720p content
1) Send 720p60 to display
2) Scale to 1080p

The less processing steps the better.

Cheers,

I have a 4:3 size HD capable tv. 1080i is fine for watching HD content, but leaving it in that mode means I don't get full use of my screen for all the other channels, thus I have to constantly switch.

I see. What a PITA. So basically native passthrough would solve it for you. I don't see that coming any time soon.

Actually I need more than just native passthrough, as my TV doesn't support 720p (or the newer 1080p, although I don't believe anything is broadcast at that resolution yet)

Ideally I need the ability to specify what output is presented for each type of signal, so that I can specify 1080i, 720p gets bumped up to 1080i, and 480p and 480i gets bumped to 480p.

The way I see it, its an extremely easy patch to implement. I wish they would just go ahead and do so. After all, the receiver already has to check what resolution is coming in, reference the settings the receiver is set to output, then do the set conversion. It seems like only a minor fix to change the programming reference so that rather than always outputing just the one resolution thats currently set in the menus, it has the ability to do a bit more complex if/then output using all four off the major resolutions available, with a toggle for native passthrough or processed added in to boot.

Same here, I have a 4:3 Sony HD tv I have it set at 1080i but I just Zoom the picture. I'd be very happy if they can give us native passthrough.

The Samsung upstairs is 16:9 so I don't have that problem.

I honestly don't think you will see this feature. The demand for it is so low- how long has it been since an HDTV has been sold that does not accept all of the commonly used ATSC signals? Do even the low end CRTs lack this feature today?

Even if there was demand, you'd likely have bought a new HDTV before Dish would release such a feature. There are too many other items in the que ahead of it.

I've got two important questions. One, is the "HD mapdown" where they replace my SD version of WABC at Channel 7 with the HD version?

Two, Danny is that Amy Acker in your avatar or someone else.... We need to give Danny an award for sprucing up the look of this place all the time....:love

It's unfortunate... E* really has not given us much opportunity to agree with their new slogan.......

"It's About Time"

Oh well... we sit, we wait..

I saw the earlier posts about the delay but had insomnia this morning and did a quick check after the default 3am (pacific time) scan for software upgrades. Not seeing the upgrade yet.
