Sony said Monday it is bringing out a cheaper player for Blu-ray discs early this summer.

The BDP-S300 will cost $599, yet will have the same capabilities as the $999 BDP-S1 Sony is currently selling including 1080p video and CD playback (Something the BDP-S1 did not have).

More on this player when we get it.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! :(

I read it and I don't know what you are pointing out that is new? And why is it in the hd-dvd forum?

Posted elsewhere.

And belongs in the Blu-ray forum (or the "war" forum). Posting it here in the HD-DVD forum is kind of "in your face."

$599.00 Blu-ray player........showing it this week.....
By the time I got to that part of the article, I had glossed over. Nothing against you, but the article you linked to was all over the place and then to only mention the new player in 1 little paragraph, I just missed it.

No offense taken. All over the place is a bit of a stretch. The article basically said
Sony is

1 - kicking ass w HDTV
2 - wants to dominate w bluray
3 - is bullish on HD camcorders

All over the place would be a GWB press conference

Exactly, even your summary doesn't mention what IMO is the biggest news of a BD player on the same price level with HD-DVD players. Honestly, it's not a big deal, the article was just (for me) tough to read and keep interested in the way it was written and I completely missed the news on the BD player.

Sounds like Sony just canabilized the sales of their S1 - why pay $400 more when the S300 can do the same thing plus play CDs. But then I've read that Sony outsourced production of the S1, to Pansonic, I think, so they could focus on the PS3. Actually, Sony probably just put the hurt on all other Blu-ray players, except for their PS3. Not sure I'd want to be a Sony "business partner".

I've read that one of the reasons the only manufacturer making HD DVD is Toshiba because of their price point - it's hard for other manufacturers to make an HD DVD player and make a profit. I wonder if Sony just did the same thing for Blu-ray players?

Very good question. We probably won't have long to wait to find out.

I wonder if that $599 player is going to have analog out for the new audio codecs. Probably won't and it will probably not have an ethernet connection either.

Engadget has a pic of the new Sony BD unit:
