Official 622 L4.01 Discussion Thread

I am a beta tester. My second 622 is now updated to L4.01. Just started to play with it. There is a difference between to two. When I hit the guide button on the beta download , I cycle thru all 7 versions ,all channels, all subs, hd , list1-4. On the new download I get only 3. The lists1-4 are not cycled thru. I prefer that until I want to set some favorites.
Just found another difference. The beta version brought up a password screen to reach the weather channel interactive application. The newer download does not. On the beta version I am locked out of that application. I have never set a password on either receiver.

Not sure what you are talking about here? I think you are saying that you have L4.01 on both boxes and that you received it on 1 box because of the beta request from Dish and 1 just cause that box was scheduled? Assuming that is the case, there is no differenct between the software. There is only 1 L4.01 version, there isn't a beta one and a regular one. It sounds to me like you (or someone in your house) have just set up differet favorites lists on 1 of the boxes and not the other.

The software that went out to "testers" and everyone else was the same exact software. There was no special "beta" software rolled out to the testers.

So far, so good!

I thought the problem was heat-related, I have now got a notebook chiller under the 622 and a 5" desk fan blowing across the top and my cabinet is open front and back. I've had 6 more crashes (that I know about) since doing that. Seems to occur most frequently while watching OTA. Will try the power-off, wait 5 minutes, power-on reboot this evening. I have loved my 622 since getting it a year ago, I am now ready to toss the thing out the window. I am in the process of trying to send all my saved shows to the DVD recorder in case I need to swap this unit out.

Very frustrated! :(

Got home yesterday, the 622 was rebooting every 15 minutes more or less! Pulled the plug and waited 5 minutes. Pushed in plug and waited, took a loonnngg time to come back. This morning, all my recordings for the evening were intact (indicating no reboots while recording). Ran all morning (copied 6 hours of recordings to DVD) and not a single reboot!!! I even turned off the (very loud) 5" desk fan after the first hour!

Hope it sticks! (I REALLY hate the FF and REW jumpiness)!
Jeff

You, know, SD finally looks decent on my Plasma when its in the side by side PIP (or is it POP) mode.

Too bad they didn't try to fit all three tuners on the screen at one time? :D

What I am saying is that L401 acts differently on my 2 622s connected to exactly the same type of tvs. I believe that L401 might show different results for different versions of the 622 hardware. Both my 622s were set up by me in the exactly same configuration and neither ever had a password requirement. Yet, one now asks for a password to get an interactive application, the weather channel. The other doesn't. One gets the 7 guide types to be cycled thru. The other only the original 3. I have reported this to E* and other than a thank you e-mail, I have not received any advice to resolve my problems.

Has anyone noticed an improvement in the OTA performance of the 622 under L401. Have a CBS station that came in at 84 strength, with macroblocking, probably due to multipath problems, but since getting the update it jumped to 100 and picture is rock solid.

Apologies if this was mentioned somewhere else in this immense thread, but one knock on the new, ubiquitous "HD" icons showing up all over the place: they don't appear on OTA channels. Since the 622 doesn't have an analog NTSC tuner, any OTA would necessarily be digital. And since the HD only appears based on the *potential* for the station to show HD, it would make sense (and be consistent) to include the "HD" for the OTA channels.

Maybe if we ever get native resolution pass through, the 622 could know whether an individual *show* is HD or SD and reflect that info in the list of recorded events (or even in the guide...:)

Otherwise, everything came in for me and appears to be working as expected.

As far as the debate on whether E* mapped the HD channels that arent simulcasts of their SD counterparts using appropriate logic, I'd like to propose that E* make a change to our Guides/Favorites lists...specifically I'd like them to allow us to modify (and/or hide and/or delete) the ALL CHAN, ALL SUB, and ALL HD guides. I lock out all the never- watched channels in my house, and thus my ALL CHAN and ALL SUBS lists are identical (making the ALL SUB a waste/nuisance to me).

If we could just add the channels we wanted to view on any/all guide lists, we'd be able to avoid these map-down duplicates. For those who might inadvertently clear everything, E* could put a 'Restore all channels' button, that could function the opposite of their current 'Clear List' button under Favorites.

I'd also love it if they'd allow longer favorites names and the ability for the user to determine case (lower case/upper case) for every character we enter.

The above plus giving us (back) OTA subchannel EPG info would make my E* experience damn near perfect.

I guess I don't understand the need to modify any of the existing ALL lists when you can create your own list of what ever you want.

Since you have two lists the same maybe allowing to not show or toggle through some of the lists would be a good feature.

Primetimeguy,

i'd rather not have to cycle through guides that i dont use. and the only way to make them useable (for me) is to lock out over 600 channels that i dont ever watch. i could consider those first 3 guides useable, and not have to lock down so many channels if i could customize the first 3 guides to my exact needs.

I agree we should be able to turn off the "default" guides when favorites lists are in use.

Regarding "HD" designator on OTA stations. E* knows what local stations are out there, and which subchannels are used for the HD feeds. Thus, it would be somewhat trivial to mark (example from my DMA) WKRG-01 as HD but not WKRG-02 since -01 is the digital station corresponding with -00 in the dish locals. It's not always -01 that should be marked as HD but they know which one.

Welll.... I've got some bad news. We've had an ongoing problem with KTBC Fox7 in Austin. The beta 4.01 fixed the problem and broke the "Tricks" (frame-by-frame, etc.)

I came home tonight and found that the Tricks are somewhat better, but I'm having problems with Fox again.

I wonder if they changed the code in the rollout from the beta to the final version. I suspect that I may have gotten the regular download last night or today. I can't think of any other explanation.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the OTA tuner is sitting there doing its thing, even if you're using only the satellite tuners, and a glitch in the OTA signal can have unintended effects on receiver operation. I'm running a sort of unscientific experiment of trying to make sure to leave the OTA tuner on the channel with strongest signal before doing something else and see if it's more stable.

Not that big of deal for me - probably 95% of the time, we just stay on our "MAIN" favorites EPG, so not cycling thru anything. It seems easier to maintain this favorites (adding new channels as they come) than to lockout all the crap we don't want to see. Also have favorites for PPV and the Sirius Music channels, so occasionally have to cycle thru the All/All-Sub lists, but no big deal.
