Dice-K impressive in debut for Red Sox <!-- END HEADLINE -->
<!-- BEGIN STORY BODY -->By DOUG TUCKER, AP Sports Writer 8 minutes ago

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Dice-K had a debut that lived up to its advance billing. With millions of early rising viewers keeping track on Japanese television, Daisuke Matsuzaka struck out 10 in seven innings for the Boston Red Sox in a 4-1 victory over the<FORM class=yqin action=http://yq.search.yahoo.com/search method=post></FORM>Kansas City Royals on Thursday.
<!-- SpaceID=0 noconn 61 ads1 -->Matsuzaka (1-0) allowed six hits, including a sixth-inning homer by David DeJesus, and walked one in his first game in the major leagues.

His famed array of fastballs, changeups and breaking pitches at times was dazzling. Flashing a reddish-orange glove during his slow-motion windup, he retired 10 batters in a row during one stretch. He struck out the side in the fourth on 14 pitches.

Matsuzaka left the Seibu Lions to sign a $52 million, six-year contract with the Red Sox, who bid $51,111,111 for his rights. The right-hander also proved himself a skillful fielder, pouncing off the mound three times to field weak grounders.

His total salary is ~ 105million for 6 years. Posting bonus 51M + 9M * 6 years of service = 105million. 105M/6 years of service = 17.5Million per year. Assuming he makes 30 starts this year each game cost $1.71Millon. So more or less a loss cost 1.71Million to the Sox per game. On the opposite side of the equation Felix Hernandez only makes $400K this year so in essence Felix Hernandez costs 13.3K per game.

I wonder what it is costing the Yankees to have all those broke dick pitchers, with half of them on the DL.

Yankee Fans should not throw stones at thier glass houses. Considering they paid 26 mil for Igawa and he SUCKS.

Easy... my friend... Yankees have never gave any player the best contract out there even though they are in the habit of spending money on their team above everyone else. That being said,

Wang is under $1M
Karsten is under $1M
Mussina ~ 7- 8M

Who else is in the DL of the pitching staff?

Game 3

Chacin beats him by pitching better... Matsuzaka seems to be in control until he got one bad inning where he could not find the plate.

His total salary is $52 million over six years. There are incentives that could raise it to as muchas $60 million over the six years. The $512 million figure was paid to his former team not to him and is actually 60 billion yen which at the time it was signed equated to $51,111,111.11.

In 2007 he is making about $ 6 million in salary with a $2 million signing bonus. In addition the 30 start figure is low for a number one or two pitcher ina five man rotation----but might be high if he gets injured. I am not going to do the math but I suspect that this still puts him above the poverty level even if it is not the $1.71 million per game figure cited in the thread.

Game 4 he had a no decision but could have lost the game since the Yankees scored 5 runs off him. He gest another chance tomorrow against the Yankees (second time around). They may not played tomorrow as rain is in the forecast.

If you ar e referring to the game he pitched last weekend (his fourth start and the only time he has faced NY so far) he got the win not a no decision. He is 2-2 after four starts. true it was not the best outing of all time and under other circumstances (less run support) he might have lost the game. But his third start was not so bad---had his team scoreda few runs he might have won that. but in baseball the might haves don't count. So he lst his third start and won his fourth.

right on ang and karsten. Way off on Mussina. He is making more than $11 million this year---and the deal was for less than he earned before. His original Yankee deal was 6 years $88 million.

Well he is 3-2 now with a 4.36 ERA . I don't know if ANYONE is worth all that the Sox spent on this one but so far he has had some good outings and some mediocre ones. As a Sox fan all i can do is hope for the best. B$6.8 million in salary back. and the $ 2 million signing bonus and the payment to the Lions is long gone.

Well certainly a bad outing this time and the ERA continues to rise. this time though he really does escape witah a no decision.

7 runs over 5 innings. This is the second time that he faced the Mariners. As one scout put it, the League will not adjust to Matsuzaka but Matsuzaka will need to adjust to the league. Posting an ERA of 5.45 so far.

Where is Patrick Patterson going? It's Kentucky
