Uplink on 24 Ghz. Downlink on 17 Ghz. Places the band in-between Regular DBS and Ka. Makes for better recaption than Ka and smaller dishes than regular DBS. Would seem to be a candidate for the new service Charlie mentioned.

Using MPEG4 for everything will allow them to carry everything they currently offer on ALL of their satellites using just two satellites and having enough room for another 400 or so SD channels, and another 150 HD channels.
I hear that the bandwidth savings on the SD channels is amazing, plus the PQ is as good or better then what we have now.
To me this is a great thing and I cant wait to see it. Although I am sure it could be up to a year before we fully see it in all its glory. I never count on Dish Network to do anything on time.
So Scott I guess the old dbs slots will be used for something else once the mpeg4 migration is finished? And I guess there will be no more mpeg 2 receivers for new installs? Since all the receivers they will be using are going to be hd and mpeg 4 , there would be no problem eliminating the sd feed of the same channel once an hd one is available. Especially the sd locals? They could at least start doing these in digital even if they are just 480p they would look better than the analog signal that will be going away in less than 2 years.
Do we have final word about DVB standard on new sats ? If it will DVB-S2, then no one currrent receiver will works there !
150 HD channels will not be enough for very long.
There are 210 markets, and a few have less than 4 networks, but I think that 800 local HD channels is a fair estimate. Plus about 30 HD RSNs. About the same number of Premium Channels will be HD eventually. Someone joked in a thead about HD Shopping Channels, but I expect they will be HD in months rather than years, because there is $$ at stake, and they have probably the lowest costs for conversion to HD of any channels.
3 big HD selling seasons coming:
- "Black Friday" (day after Thanksgiving)
- Week or two before Super Bowl 2008
- and the big one, the month before Beiing Olympics Summer2008.
At that point, only a year before 2009 changeover.
While I was initially skeptical about HD adoption, I did not anticipate the snowballing effect of LCD techology improvement coupled with continual price decreases due to economies of scale.
Is it cheaper to launch a new satellite and carry MPEG-4 or secure the encryption? I believe the cart is before the horse here. I believe retailers would benefit more from a secure service.

However here is what I would like to see done.
When MPEG2 is shut off, the two satellites 110 and 119 I would like to see them also be a MPEG4 service, however this time gear it to those on the West Coast with West Coast feeds of all the networks that have west coast versions such as USA, Disney, A&E etc. Also move all of the HD locals that serve the West onto 110 and 119 which will open up room on the East Coast birds.
This would also alow folks on the east who are savy enough to put up a second Dish and have both East and West Coast feeds.
Its win win all around in that situation.
QVC is already in the midst of converting their entire broadcast center into a HD production center. I thought I read somewhere they're shooting for Q4 2007 to do QVC-HD.
I suspect you'll see QVC -HD sooner than later. Dish will charge them more for the transmission costs and QVC will pay because they have a virtual license to print money.

I would hope that what we end up is quality better than we have now. If they're going to switch all this over they should at least up the quality to boot.
There's one good use for HD-lite. Crank the compression up as far as possible and not waste any more capacity than necessary.
(Of course...how much you wanna bet the HD shopping channels get full 1920X1080?

That would be great except we still don't know what kind of lnb and dish they will be using . THis reverse band for dbs comes to mind as more room for more hd, that hasn't been decided how this fits into their plans either. I just wonder how many more dishes and lnbs and combinations that Dish would offer?
It seems like they are leasing the space on a lot of birds and they won't need it once they move everything to mpeg 4. Did they give you any kind of idea what the 18 inch would have for lnbs Scott? I would hope that you could continue to use the dish pro plus twins , triples etc and just flip your sat dish you already have to the new mpeg 4 sats . If all you need is an 18 inch dish then the 1000.2 sat dish would be a hell of a rain fade killer.
Where is this LIST? I saw where someone said their city was #35 and another was #100. Is this list online?
