...externally loaded EPG data. I started looking at what it would take to simulate a dvb stream to load the epg data, and quite frankly I'm not up to any of that. There has to be maybe one of those linux devices that does EPG over ethernet or from a usb thumb drive or something.

The non-existance of an EPG is keeping me from fully rolling out DVB in our household. The family simply will not deal with no onscreen guide. My only other choice is to hack our current PVR so that I can load custom guide data from a proxy server and then determine a way to convert its channel changing commands into something that will work with one of my receivers - but that's just plain icky.

Can anybody point me to a receiver that you know supports what I'm looking for? I have no problem pulling down the guide data and formatting it into the appropriate file format and/or sending the necessary commands to a receiver from a program/etc... I just need a receiver that does this stuff (and preferrably a support forum that has dealt with this?)

Thx guys!

I dunno if tivo or mythtv would assist?
I agree that a PVR modification may be another alternative (I already have a ReplayTV in each room), but the loading of alternate guides for commercial PVR's isn't all that fun either, plus there's still the issue of translating the channel selection from the PVR into something that will control a DVB STB (maybe using something like Girder?)

I'd much rather just find a linux-based (or other) dvb receiver that supports loading the epg if possible. I know that people made mention to such a beast in another epg thread of mine, but I cannot find info corroborating such a device.

thx

Have you checked out the AB IP Box 250S PVR Linux based receiver featured in Tele Satellite magazine?

titantv.com is about the best you will find for a tv guide sort of thingy for fta. No fta receiver that I know of can pull that stuff in... Occassionally, there are some epg info streams on some educational channels on some feeds, but it's not normal for epg to be in fta in North America. EPG is reserved for folks that are actually paying to watch as a sort of convienience to the customer sort of thing.

If you can figure out a way to have titan tv load info in to an fta box, that'd be cool. My ati-all-in wonder can do something like that for cable and local ota channels, and I think that pulls info off of some website database sort of similar to what titan tv has for channel listings... If someone could make some sort of plug in like that ati program deally and integrate it in to nextorm or dvb dream, that'd be awesome.

Okay, so a bit of digging tonight, and the answer was right in front of me. There are a couple of "plug-ins" that support uploading epg data to the dreambox. So, unless there's something else out there that I'm missing, I guess the search is on for a decently priced dreambox (or two) from a non-hack site!

dreambox has different images (firmware) you can load, pli has an epg sqlite import utility, youd have to get it into the right format on your pc, but then its easy to import.

note: I know alot of you are used to non-factory firmware meaning hack firmware, dreambox doesnt work like that, its opensrc, people have taken the plain jain firmware and added features like cc, sqlite epg data for easy importing, fancy skins, etc. just wanted to make that clear so everyone didnt think I was violating the hack talk rule.
