    Thinking about adding c-band... possibly.

Bigger is probably better, but I've had good experience with 6' - and I'm new as well. I use 6' WSI (unmotorized), and ESX242.

    Which Receiver?

I've had good luck with Openbox S9, if you're looking for a value HD FTA receiver (so good I bought a 2nd set for my dad - he's been happy with the performance, too). My other receiver was an Omegasat 5701, which I think has a better user interface (but no HD).

    my 6' WSI special

I live in one of Chicago suburbs as well - that was a mighty (but luckily very brief, in my area) storm. I thought I'd have to say goodbye to my 2 dishes - fortunately they held up. The Q from my 6' WSI went down from 74% to 60%, and the smaller WSI 9036 rotated about 5 degrees (and some...

    my 6' WSI special

I finally finished installation of the bargain 6' WSI. My main purpose was to get NHK World HD - so it is currently aimed at 58W (IS-9) fixed. I use it in combination with a bargain LNB, DMX-242 that I bought off eBay. Solid signal S&Q on Openbox S9. I was skeptical at first, but it turned...

    Montana PBS on Pansat 9200

I realize this isn't exactly the right thread. My motor elevation angle is set correctly based on my latitude, and the azimuth is about correct as well since I am able to receive channels in most sats in between 61W and 113W, but beyond that range it's a hit and miss. I do think it needs fine...

    Montana PBS on Pansat 9200

Yes you're correct, zamar23 - WS9036 dish, my LNB is ESX521, and the receiver is Omegasat5700. Thanks in advance for any advice!

    Montana PBS on Pansat 9200

I'm in my first week of FTA joy here. My setup picks up sats from 61W (Amazonas 2) to 113W (Satmex6), but failed to find anything on AMC21 (and a few other sats). In the case of AMC21, signal strength is around 75-80%, Q is 70-75%, but the receiver doesn't seem to find a single channel.... I...

    Dish elevation angle (again?)

Thanks zamar23 - let me do more reading. At this point to be honest I think the final setup (i.e. where the dish is pointed etc) between the 2 methods is the same. The difference is how I get there; instead of setting the dish elevation angle on the dish bracket (based on latitude &...

    Dish elevation angle (again?)

Yup, was able to pick up channels from sats within +/- 20 degrees, most with good signal strength & quality. I will try to scan far east/west sats later this week. Is the information in Lyngsat pretty current/accurate in general? my receiver only picks up 2 channels from AMC21 (can't...

    Dish elevation angle (again?)

I don't believe what I have is "polar mount"... I mount the whole assembly on a vertical pole so it's no different than mounting it on a J-pipe. Still in learning mode, so it is very likely that I missed something here.

    Dish elevation angle (again?)

Reporting back after the install: In short: it was a success; not as difficult as I originally thought it would be (or maybe I was plain lucky). In any case, all the information shared in this thread (and numerous others) helped tremendously in reducing the guesswork. As far as dish...

    Dish elevation angle (again?)

Thanks again everyone - and esp. RADAR, for the info. I'll take the plunge and will post back with result - good or bad.

    Dish elevation angle (again?)

My understanding was as follows, please correct me if I’m wrong: Find the closest satellite to my true south, which in my case is Galaxy 28. Per DishPointer, the elevation for that satellite is 41.5 deg for my position. The dish elevation (mounted on the motor, centered left-right, aimed at...

    Dish elevation angle (again?)

Thank you, gentlemen. Bluztrvler's suggestion makes sense - I'm not sure how successful I would be given my zero experience with all this, but I think I'll give it a try.

    Dish elevation angle (again?)

Hello everyone, I’m new to FTA (and this forum). I just received the delivery of WS9036 and the 9120 motor. I haven’t actually started the actual installation, but have started mock-assembling the pieces together. There’s one thing that still confuses me: how exactly do I set the dish...
