    Weatherize/Winterize/Rain Protection/Grounding

    I got some silicone tape from Radio Shack, which bonds very well to itself. Wrap up your connections with this (wrapping in the direction that the connector twists on), and then wrap electrical tape over it. That should keep it fairly weatherproof.

    Finding A Primestar Dish

    I spotted one in the back of a pickup truck at the grocery store. I managed to catch the driver as he was about to leave and asked if he was going to use it. Turns out it was on its way to the dump :) It looks like it just came off someone's roof, it even still has the LNB!

    Is it aimed to true south or magnetic south? For you, your true south is 175 degrees magnetic. Also try slowly sweeping it back and forth across a small arc, adjust the elevation, and sweep again.

    can you scan too much?

    Hm, I've wondered on the feedhorns with the servo, do the tuners adjust the servo for appropriate skew on each sattelite, or do they just crank it 45 degrees either direction? Or does the movement of the dish on the polar mount take care of skew?

    What do I need ?

    You'll need some way of controlling the actuator. BUD actuators work on a 36-volt drive with pulsed feedback to tell the dish mover how far the actuator has moved, the Twinhan card is designed for 12-volt low-current motors that talk DiSEqC. A V-Box or V-Box II to translate should work.

    My guess is that the cable is probably all junk unless the ends are well-sealed, braided shielding has a wonderful way of wicking water faaaaaaaar into a piece of coax.

    Downside: They take forever to take down/put up, thanks to the several hundred metal clips that hold the mesh to the ribs.
