I have a ViP 622. On Sunday I attached an indoor antenna because I want to record a PBS special in HD and DISH locals are not HD for my PBS stations. I've concluded that it only happens on 720p (rather than 1080i) broadcasts, such as Fox & ABC. A "fix" I have been using when it is real bad is to watch on abc.com where many full espisodes of the shows are available. Unfortuneately access is not allowed when I'm in Mexico.

I was thinking that might be the case. I've got an old usb enclosure with a smaller capacity drive, so maybe I'll try to move the FreeAgent drive into it and see if that helps.

Watching a recorded show was so bad last night I went to abc.com & watched it on my laptop instead. I'm going to contact Dish again about this and suggest that if they don't get it fixed soon that they should offer some financial consideration to those suffering with this problem.
