Well, the issue has been solved! Doing the one thing I didn't think of (but was said here a few times) I took the hopper to my slightly older Samsung HDTV upstairs, plugged it in via HDMI and sure enough it worked. I took it back downstairs to my newer LG TV, plugged it back in to HDMI and sure...
