Stargazer, I suspect you're probably correct. Where the population density makes it economically feasible to support and/or continue FIOS installations they (Verizon) will continue to do so. In other areas they'll either sell off their interests or slow down on advertising and/or installations...

They're not that "huge" and their pockets aren't that deep compared to some of the other telcos. Almost all the old "baby bells" are in better shape financially than is Verizon. If I were a Verizon investor, I would not be a happy camper over this.

You can attempt to impugn Moffett's motives all you want. The WSJ usually does a pretty decent job of vetting the accuracy of articles that appear in the print edition. It doesn't alter the basic fact that even Verizon's own executives admit that they are losing money on land line based...

Your post indicates that you either didn't read the article or are purposely misinterpreting it to suit your own opinions. I'd invite you, or anybody else, to read the article and decide for themselves which of our statments is most accurate and factual.

I'd suggest you go online or to your local library and read the article yourself, then make up your own mind. The article did not say that Verizon was spending $800 on the cost per customer but was LOSING (on average) $800 for every customer they signed up to FIOS. That's a huge difference!

The analyst didn't go into detail but I'm pretty sure that's what he meant. Start up costs, costs of equipment,fiber cable and labor, programming costs, discounts on receiving equipment, etc, etc.. He also didn't go into how long (if ever) he thought it would take Verizon to recoup their...

There was a lengthy article on page C14 of yesterday's (1/26/2010) Wall Street Journal in which an analyst from a respected Wall Street investment firm stated that Verizon was losing $800.00 on each new FIOS customer they hook up. This begs the question: If this is true, how long can Verizon...

They weren't all bad. I was one of the first adopters and mine worked perfectly until the day I sold it and replaced it with a D* HD DVR. The only thing I ever did to it was replace the cooling fan because the old one got too noisy.

Activating HD receivers without extending contract? They're not that rare, I have two of them sitting in a closet right now!
