Is Verizon Losing Money on FIOS?

Stargazer, I suspect you're probably correct. Where the population density makes it economically feasible to support and/or continue FIOS installations they (Verizon) will continue to do so. In other areas they'll either sell off their interests or slow down on advertising and/or installations...

Is Verizon Losing Money on FIOS?

They're not that "huge" and their pockets aren't that deep compared to some of the other telcos. Almost all the old "baby bells" are in better shape financially than is Verizon. If I were a Verizon investor, I would not be a happy camper over this.

Is Verizon Losing Money on FIOS?

You can attempt to impugn Moffett's motives all you want. The WSJ usually does a pretty decent job of vetting the accuracy of articles that appear in the print edition. It doesn't alter the basic fact that even Verizon's own executives admit that they are losing money on land line based...

Is Verizon Losing Money on FIOS?

See my OP. It was on page c14 of the 1/26/2010 print edition of the WSJ. Read it for yourself.

Is Verizon Losing Money on FIOS?

Your post indicates that you either didn't read the article or are purposely misinterpreting it to suit your own opinions. I'd invite you, or anybody else, to read the article and decide for themselves which of our statments is most accurate and factual.

Is Verizon Losing Money on FIOS?

I'd suggest you go online or to your local library and read the article yourself, then make up your own mind. The article did not say that Verizon was spending $800 on the cost per customer but was LOSING (on average) $800 for every customer they signed up to FIOS. That's a huge difference!

Is Verizon Losing Money on FIOS?

The analyst didn't go into detail but I'm pretty sure that's what he meant. Start up costs, costs of equipment, fiber cable and labor, programming costs, discounts on receiving equipment, etc, etc.. He also didn't go into how long (if ever) he thought it would take Verizon to recoup their...

Is Verizon Losing Money on FIOS?

There was a lengthy article on page C14 of yesterday's (1/26/2010) Wall Street Journal in which an analyst from a respected Wall Street investment firm stated that Verizon was losing $800.00 on each new FIOS customer they hook up. This begs the question: If this is true, how long can Verizon...

    DirecTV Whiner Thread

And exactly who was it that held a gun to your head and made you sign up originally? Was it the same person who held the gun to your head and made you buy/lease all that equipment? Good choices=good consequences Poor choices=bad consequences

When are the new HD channels launching?

Harsh's posts are especially "interesting and edifying" in view of the fact that he's not even a D* subscriber.

    tivo hd?

They weren't all bad. I was one of the first adopters and mine worked perfectly until the day I sold it and replaced it with a D* HD DVR. The only thing I ever did to it was replace the cooling fan because the old one got too noisy.

Activating HD receivers without extending contract? They're not that rare, I have two of them sitting in a closet right now!

    DIRECTV HD?

What difference should it make to you now? As "Bubba Clinton" is so fond of saying, "you don't have a dog in this fight any longer." Enjoy your FIOS and Tivos, leave the rest of us alone!

Vurbano, does this mean that we will not be hearing from you in the D* forums anymore? Enjoy your FIOS!

    MSNBCHD ?

MSNBCHD? How many times have the Mods asked us not to make posts like this?

    Too much to ask????

I'd still suggest you raise the $2K (however you care to do it), buy your 2 HD Tivos and go to FIOS. Then you can gripe in those forums, not in this one!:D

    Too much to ask????

Vurbano, I agree with the general sentiment of your post. Having said that, NOBODY in the history of SatelliteGuys griped longer or louder about not having their HD LILs in their local market than you. Now you finally have them and you're still not happy. You've threatened to quit D*...

I still don't see how this is fraud on D*'s part. The blame lies elsewhere!

    TiVo-powered high-def DVR?

Over the years I've had an H10-250 (one of the first adopters) a regular Tivo and currently an HR20-700. The Tivo based units were good but so is the HR20. Mine's almost 100% trouble free and I'd probably opt to keep it over a Tivo baseed MPEG 4 unit. Some people just prefer the Tivo...

    Buying receivers from other people?

Ditto to what Jimbo said. My HR20-700 has performed flawlessly. I had an HR10-250 before that and I prefer the HR20.

    Dish Network and Legal Disputes

There's a new post today about the FTC suing Dish over the "no call rule." Is it just my imagination or does Dish (Charlie Ergen) seem to almost revel in getting involved in legal disputes of one kind or another with various governmental agencies and/or program providers? You don't seem to...

    DirecTV Protection Plan

It depends on what your definition of "pay through the nose for it" is based on your own experiences. One year's cost of the protection plan is approximately the same cost of one service call without the plan during that year.:eureka
