You will still be able to get the regular channels from your local digital stations for free. The pay content will be in addition to that (if it ever comes into being - may just be an engineering department idea that won't be used).
I think we are seeing in the instruction manual pages copied over from the TR-40/Pal instead of actual DVR TVGOS pages. It makes no sense that you would pay $250 for a dual-tuner DVR to be a slave tuner/digital-to-analog TVGOS converter for your TVGOS recorder - that's what is envisioned for the...
Pardon my asking, but how do you know that for a fact?
Aren't many of these boxes using the same components? Don't you think someone could use their software (and hopefully improve it) somewhere else? Isn't Dish's guide far and away better than the competitions'?
Smith, P. is the electronics expert - NOT me!
All I did was post a picture on AVS of the screen that Smith, P. accessed by inserting jumper J9. There was too much "no way this thing will update OTA" talk going on, and I went for shock value. Unfortunately, I didn't credit Smith, P. either -...
At least one person on AVS has (Symbios) - let him be the guinea pig?
But wait - they are only available For A Limited Time! :hungry: Better order now While Supplies Last!
BTW, has anyone heard anything about the new DTVPal Plus now listed on the NTIA website?
First I'd heard of it too. Go to page 22 of this pdf for the overview:

Could it be they are using this to securely send software downloads to the Pal? Don't want their fine programming  to be hacked?
You need a box wherever you have an NSTC-only tuner. If you want to keep your timer-enabled channel changing on a recording device, this is the only box which currently will do it (sometimes) (if you hold your tongue right) (if you live in the right broadcast area). So, if you have 4 televisions...
Make the call
I have tried many times to find the Pal at sears.com. Could not find it OR the Magnavox - "converter box" search turned up some lingerie (?) and tools, other iterations of the words "dtvpal", "digital", "converter", and "box" were fruitless as well. SO, I think you have to call...
Sears registers treat the coupon as a credit/debit card (probably because it looks like one!), and they are only programmed to allow one card per transaction (to keep Bubba from financing a big screen using all of his available credit card balances?) At least the CSR's figured the gift card...
When I called them to find out when they might be getting them in, the person told me, "We have the Magnavox box, and some new off-brand one with a weird name." I asked my question, and they said, "Yeah, that's the new one, DTVPal."

Picked one up yesterday at my local Sears (Springfield, OR). They had 14 on the shelf (didn't ask how many in the stockroom). $59.99 - coupon.
That's interesting, considering this press release today:

I GOT MY PAL AT SEARS!
No shelf tag, right next to the Magnavoxes. Had 14 on the shelf - didn't ask how many in the back room. Haven't hooked it up yet to see what version I got.
SEARS - Where America Shops for DTVpals
Just got off the phone with my local Sears store (Springfield, OR, sister city to Eugene). He tells me, "Yeah, we have a bunch of converter boxes. We have the Magnavox, and some new off-brand one." I ask him if he's heard about getting in the DTVPals, and...
