Why are you leaving Dish Network Poll

Bang for buck. DirecTV offered me far more for about the same money (when promos end) I was going to be paying Dish. Not to mention that I have discounts for 24 months that make it much cheaper until then.

What equipment that equals the 722 would cost $300?

    Whole-Home DVR Service

I'm not sure what you are talking about with the cost. I believe (I could be wrong) that D* charges $5 for every box after the first, no matter whether the box is SD, HD, or DVR. As I understand, the only extra cost is the $3 charge. Now, I am not sure what other providers do, though I am fairly...

    Finally signed up....Disappointed

Right, but the pasty, oversmoothed skintones he is describing could be a calibration issue.

    Finally signed up....Disappointed

I would agree with tvropro, try some basic calibration of your own, though maybe not on the input you paid for. See if you can't get some more realistic skintones and better sharpness.

    Finally signed up....Disappointed

The thing that kind of stands out for me is ISF calibrated display. As I understand, the calibrator would have calibrated the TV for a particular source on a particular input, making it look as good as possible. The problem is you now have a different source feeding that input. That could...

    Whole-Home DVR Service

Good point. Right now, DirecTV has two advantages on the equipment front, they are cheaper and they offer a good MRV solution that works. If Dish simply offers MRV, they still have the issue of being more expensive for homes with several TVs. And that is assuming they dump the whole TV1, TV2...

    Whole-Home DVR Service

Because I was curious I just tested this. You can watch whatever you want. The TVs are completely independent. What I did was watch a recording Dexter and a recording of Biography in each room, but the recording were both on the same DVR. It worked fine. Then I watched a recording of The Glades...

The courtesy equipments credits are over.. now what?

So similar to a 622/722 with two TV outs, just now both HD? Will that not require running an HDMI cable to both? Or can it be done over coax? If it doesn't require a cable such as HDMI or component, and it has 4 HD tuners in it, I think that could be a winner. Otherwise, it is pretty much just...

    3D on Dish??????

The problem with the 3DS and all glasses-less 3D is off axis performance. If you are not in the exact right spot, the 3D does not work. On the 3DS, this really isn't much issue since it is a single-user device. On a TV however, it is a showstopper as they say. I believe there was a glasses-less...

    Whole-Home DVR Service

That's correct as far as DirecTV. I had two HR24s installed which have the DECA built-in. The only cost to me was $99 for the second DVR. If I had wanted a receiver without DVR, it would have been free. In my opinion, Sling is not a whole home solution, at least not yet. I believe there were VIP...

The courtesy equipments credits are over.. now what?

Even if you assume that the OP needs 8 outputs, you are forgetting that all 8 of those boxes could be HD-DVRs and each would have its own hard drive. However, with Dish, only half will be in HD, the other are SD TV2, unless I misunderstand how the 622/722 work (1 HD output, 1 SD output), and...

Sorry, multi-room viewing. It is just another way of saying whole-home DVR.

The courtesy equipments credits are over.. now what?

If you need that many TVs and/or DVRs then Dish is not a good option for you, unless don't mind paying through the nose. D* will charge $5 per ($15 total for 3) and give you DVRs in every room. If I was in your position, I would call Dish, tell them that the $27 difference is a dealbreaker and...

My Dish vs. Direct Comparison (long)

I made it very clear to D* that if the installer showed up with anything but HR24s he would not be installing. Now, if I wasn't informed, then I would have not known the difference, but if you know what you want, you can always refuse the install until you get what you want. I agree though...

My Dish vs. Direct Comparison (long)

The HR24 is easily fast enough to claim parity with the Dish boxes. While I believe the new 922 is still faster, in everyday use the HR24 is to the point where speed no longer really matters. This was the biggest hurdle for me when switching to DirecTV and one of the reasons I initially went...

POLL: Which discounts/promos did you get on your Spring/Summer 2010 DirecTV order??

Here is what I got about a week and a half ago: $29 off 1st yr/ $14 off 2nd year $10 off for 20 months AAA discount Free HD for Life Tried to stack the referral credit, but was unable to. All in all, I am really happy with the deal I got and made the switch from Dish a no brainer.

My Dish vs. Direct Comparison (long)

I just made a very similar switch as you did. I was with Dish for 22 months and have been with DirecTV now for a week and a half. I must say, I agree with most of what you say. My only disputes would be with the guides. Many people said the guide would be the hardest thing to give up from Dish...

    Whole-Home DVR Service

I think it already is a customer retention issue. I just left Dish a week or so ago, and whole-home DVR was one of the major cost to benefit factors that DirecTV had over Dish for me. With two HR24s in the house, it is a dream. In my opinion, Dish has mostly lost any hardware lead they had with...

Funny, I did almost the exact same thing this morning! Except no Bing cash back because I wanted the AAA discount. Now to see if I get HR-24s tomorrow or not.

    Thinking of switching

The one thing I have yet to see is how fast the HR-24 responds to DVR functions such as FF, REW, Pause, Play. However, the speed on the HR-24 is obviously vastly better than the HR-23 and good enough for daily use. Especially when you factor in the ability for MRV which Dish simply does not offer.

    Thinking of switching

I am about to make the same switch I think for very near the same reasons, although I had already been contemplating the move before the Disney thing. For the record, the Disney spat is not a reason to switch. It will end and it will happen to other providers with other channels, likely much...

    Questions before making the switch...

Thanks for the quick responses! I am thinking I want two DVRs to be sure that there will not be any conflicts. Will the MRV work for both? Or is it more an option of MRV with one DVR or two DVR and no MRV? Also, I am a AAA member and they have a discount on top of the nationally advertised...

    Questions before making the switch...

I am a current Dish Network subscriber and am close to making the switch to DirecTV. It seems like with the HR-24, DirecTV has caught up with the Dish equipment, especially speedwise which is important to me. I also would love to have the MRV. So I have a couple of questions. First, should I...
