Can't win for losing - strike three on attempted new install

Freedom from moles in the back yard would be a good thing too! :( I know what you mean about the trees, but i like my shade in the summers. A neighbor cut several trees that were close to his house and said he saw his utility bills increase about 30% during the summer due to the increased...

Can't win for losing - strike three on attempted new install

I really haven't seen a lot of squirrels around my house. Lots of other critters like deer, rabbits, possums, etc, but very few squirrels. Not sure what kind of gutter guards i will put on, but as it is now I have to clean them out 2 or 3 times per year. About a month ago I scooped out...

Can't win for losing - strike three on attempted new install

Joe, I think he zip-tied it to the support bars that are held up by the gutter spikes. I will have to take a look at it, but I asked him to route it so that it would not interfere with cleaning the gutters. I plan to add some gutter guards at some time in the future. Hopefully this won't...

Can't win for losing - strike three on attempted new install

Update: Got R Done!! Just wanted to update everyone - DTV sent out one of their more experienced techs on Saturday, and while the existing cable carried the correct rating, he was uncomfortable with the fact that there was at least one barrel connector in there. He was willing to let me sign...

Can't win for losing - strike three on attempted new install

Sorry Claude, should have mentioned that I have a large tree that causes a LOS issue for easy dish locations that are close to the ground. Pretty much the only place with a good LOS on the house is where the current E* dish is mounted - on the chimney chase. Since I already have RG6 cables...

Can't win for losing - strike three on attempted new install

Jimbo, what's considered a "real long run"? I have about 20 feet down the chimney chase, maybe 35 feet along the back of the house, another 20 around the side of the house, and then 20 inside. That's somewhere around 100'. Too long for CCS?

Can't win for losing - strike three on attempted new install

That's the kind of feedback I'm looking for! Now if I can just find someone who is willing to step outside the DTV corporate guidelines, I'll be in business. SIG, any chance I could coax you down to Northern KY? Beer's on me! (but only after the SAT is installed. ;) )

That's what I thought. Now if only I could get DTV to see it that way.

Can't win for losing - strike three on attempted new install

The weather was nice today (finally) so I climbed up on the roof and took a close line at the coax that is feeding the DISH dual LNB setup that is there now. On the jacket is marked: Vextra dual RG6 3000 MHZ 75 OHM 9700851 2/18 AWG CMX. I don't know if it is solid copper conductor or copper...

Can't win for losing - strike three on attempted new install

Thanks for the informative reply, Joe. Is the extra ground wire required? In other words, it I purchased my own RG6 SC coax and ran it myself so that it is hidden, would it be up to their standards for QC if it does not have that wire? At this point I would be happy to sign a waiver to try it...

Can't win for losing - strike three on attempted new install

Thanks Joe - that's kind of what I thought. He did show me his cable, and I noticed the ground wire you mentioned. Is that needed for lightning protection? I'm afraid if I let them do what they want the thing will be mounted above my front door and I'll have cable stapled all over the...

I'm going to need that padded room soon enough, with the way this install is going!

Can't win for losing - strike three on attempted new install

If I'm going to run it myself I guess it makes sense to just pull a single line all the way down to the closet downstairs, and then let DTV make the cut and install the connectors for the ground block before it comes into the house. Cheaper that way too.

Can't win for losing - strike three on attempted new install

Found this on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/100-ft-RG6-QUAD-SHIELD-coaxial-TV-F-cable-BEST-QUALITY-3GHz-UL-solid-copper-/380480484822 Does this looks like the right stuff? Sounds like a decent deal. Might still try to find some locally first.

Can't win for losing - strike three on attempted new install

His exact words were that the voltage will eventually "burn out" the conductor, resulting in a service call for him. Apparently if it fails their QC they don't get paid for the install, and they can get fined.

Can't win for losing - strike three on attempted new install

Also, can anyone confirm to me if I will also need to fish new RG6 solid copper core from the MWS switch to the Genie, or will the existing RG6 suffice? If I understand this correctly, the voltage inserter is attached to the MWS and runs the voltage up to the LNB, not to the Genie, so only that...

Can't win for losing - strike three on attempted new install

I agree Chip - sounds like I could weld with that much voltage! I wish I could get the first guy out there again. He was a straight shooter that seemed to know his stuff. I didn't get the feeling that he was just a bot working for DTV and rehashing some corporate jargon like the second two...

Can't win for losing - strike three on attempted new install

Don't you guys have any red and green ones to match my lights out front? 'Tis the season, after all! So is there agreement that the tech's claim that the center conductor on my RG6 will melt from the voltage has merit? I suppose if DTV is willing to supply me with the required length...

Can't win for losing - strike three on attempted new install

Maybe it was just MY barrel connectors that he didn't like. ;) I would be willing to sign a waiver if they would let me. If I had problems then I would go ahead and run a new line. Just want to avoid that fun project if I can.

Can't win for losing - strike three on attempted new install

I just can't seem to get the planets aligned to get my DirectTV Genie system installed. Just went through the third attempt with no luck - took the morning off from work again - alas, no Genie. First try was not the tech's fault - poor weather was resulting in waivers for picture quality...

Looking for advice on antenna for northern KY area - TV Fool included

Iceberg, thanks for the links. It almost looks like the HBU33 might be overkill for my application. Question - all but one station (ION) appear to be at 268*, and that one is at 218*. Should I aim directly at the 268* to pull in the ones clustered together, or maybe cheat a little bit in the...

Looking for advice on antenna for northern KY area - TV Fool included

Hello, I am scheduled to have Direct TV install satellite service for me using the old location on a chimney where the DISH equipment used to be. They will be using a SWM dish, so one of the RG6 coax runs from the old dual LNB will be available for a rooftop antenna. I want to route the OTA...

Is RG59 OK to use between Genie and mini clients?

texasbrit, now that I look back at the post you put up, you did indeed answer my question. I just assumed that the clients would have to use home-run connections to the SWM in order to operate independently. Apparently that is not the case. I'm not electronically "gifted" enough to know why...

Is RG59 OK to use between Genie and mini clients?

OK, I think I answered my own question after much digging on google. It looks like I can use a 2-way SWM splitter on the coax in my family room to run two clients off that run as long as I use a 4-way SWM splitter instead of an 8 way. Is that correct?
